    OK, out of sheer boredom (and off the top of my head), here is a basic synopsis of the different Model 1783 variants;

    1. Standard Sporting Rifle, 44 W.C.F., 38 W.C.F., or 32 W.C.F. with a 24" full octagon barrel, full round barrel, or half-octagon half-round barrel, and a full length magazine. Button magazines, 1/2, 2/3, and 3/4 length magazines were offered as special order items. Octagon barrels could be ordered to lengths from 20" all the way up to 36" (1" length increments from 20 - 23, and 2" increments from 24" - 36"). Straight grip buttstock was standard, pistol grip was special order. Plain (straight-grained) walnut was standard, and deluxe feathered to crotch burl was available in 1X - 5X grades. Checkering was another special order option. Set triggers could be ordered, as well as a large assortment of different special order sights (several different types of tang sights were available). Finally, in place of the standard steel crescent buttplate (with trapdoor on the 44 and 38 caliber rifles), a smooth steel or hard rubber shotgun style buttplate could be ordered, or is special cases, a nickel plated Swiss style buttplate could be installed. Generally speaking, if it has a pistol grip buttstock, deluxe wood, and is checkered, it was referred to as a "Deluxe Sporting Rifle". The rarest (and MOST valuable) of all the Model 1873s are the "One of One Thousand" and "One of One Hundred" Rifles.

    2. Saddle Ring Carbine (SRC), same calibers as the Sporting Rifle, 20" full round barrel. Shorter barrels could be ordered (down to 12"), and were referred to as "Trapper" or "Baby" SRCs. Magazines were always full length to the barrel, deluxe stockes could be ordered as well as checkering, and a shotgun style buttplate could be ordered in place of the standard carbine buttplate. A tang sight could be ordered, but the barrel mounted sights did not vary much.

    3. Musket (rare), 30" full round barrel, 27" magazine/forestock. 44 W.C.F. caliber only.

    All three of the above were further divided into First Models (serial 1 - circa 30,000), Second Models (serial circa 30,000 - 90,000) and Third Models (serial circa 90,000 - 721,000 {end of production}).

    The last variant is the 22 caliber Rifle (no SRCs). Offered in 22 Short or 22 Long, 24" or 26" octagon or round barrels only, plain stocks, and crescent buttplate only.

    When you consider all of the possible varied configurations of the standard models, it makes for a VERY large number of different variations.

    As for your Rifle, the value could be anywhere from $500 for a beater, to several thousand $$$... but who knows, as you really did not provide much in the way of information.

    tks guys, im at work so i didnt have access to serial numbers. I have a lot of questions since my father is a gun collecter. The older i get, the more interested i get in them.

    You are quite welcome, and you came to the right place to ask questions and learn about all types of firearms. If you couldn't already tell, I am primarily a WINCHESTER fanatic... most especially the really old ones[^].

    I talked to Bert H. on the phone today and just from our short conversation, he is one very knowledgable person on Winchesters. In case I did not thank you today let me formaly say Thank You sir.
