Colts patente 140361 or 151541 value

Hi

this pistol was a gift for the Mexican President Porfirio Diaz form the american ambassador in 1888,(In that date it was still an antique gun) and then he gave it to may great grand father, I tried to find information about the pistol searching the web, but there is no information anywhere

I dont even know if is a Colts patente 140361 or 151541 , I found those two numbers in the gun

I am thinking in selling the gun if I can get good money for it, but I really dont have idea of the possible value

I really appreceat If someone can orient me

    Looks like you have a Colt m1849 Pocket. Its a pity you found two numbers on it - they are its serial numbers, and ideally should all match (in 9 places). However, they both put the date of manufacture as 1858. Could the date of the gift be 1858, not 1888 as you stated? If not, then it was 30 years old when gifted.
    If you have provenance (letters etc) to prove the ownership, gifting etc, it will greatly enhance the value. Without it, it still looks like a good, engraved 4inch '49. The amount of engraving, and design, suggest Gustave Young's "Deluxe engraving". However, that would also have extended to the cylinder. I suspect that has been replaced at some time with a plain one. How many shots in the cylinder - it should be 5 (they all were in that year).

    As to value - without confirmation of provenance, I would guess at about $2500, but others may disagree. It looks nice, but the mis-matched numbers, damaged ivory grips reduce the value substantially.

    Thanks for the information, I think you are right because the only number that dismatch is the one in the cylinder that is 151541, all the others are 140361, but yes the cylinder have the 5 shots.

    the only thing I can prove is that belongs to my great grandfather that was secretary of state and friend of That president, and also was a general of Pancho Villa (Mexican Famous Revolutionary)but not prove of the gift

    I thought that the price of the pistol might be greater, because for that price is difficult to sell it oversees. Anyway thank you very much for that useful information
