M1 cartouche

I have an M1 Springfeild and it has what looks like a cartouche but it is not in the regular spot. I have only seen them below the reciever but this gun has one on the stock about 3 inches from the butt. It has RIA on top and EB on bottom inside of a box. There is a stamp of 513 on the butt and the reciever serial # is in the 3.6 millions (not ending in 513). Can anyone explain this to me.

    The numbers stamped on the stock may be the last 3 digits of another rifle; this was common practice in several European countries. The rifle may be a repatriated Greek lend lease. Does it also have #s engraved on the bolt?

    Mr. Neal,
    On the bolt is a series of numbers that reads:
    D28287-19SA
    B-16-B
    It has a circled "P" on the underside of the stock.
    When I pulled out the tigger assembly, it was numbered
    D28290-5-SA
    Now looking at the what I guess is the bullet guide there is a #13.
    Following the operating arm on down there is a D35382-6-SA.
    Directly under the operating rod handle where the wood covers is a
    series of numbers D-28291-35.
    For now that is all I can find. I am having a gunsmith look at it next weekend.

    Roger, it sounds like you have an arsenal rebuilt rifle; the drawing numbers on the parts you described indicate that they were made at different times. The stock is a US arsenal replacement stock; the circled P on the grip is the "firing proof".

    It sounds like a nice rifle, possibly a CMP "service grade" M1. Having it checked out by a gunsmith is an excellent idea.
