M1 Garand ~ S/A or CMP?
I've decided that I'm going to get an M1 Garand. Should I spend $1000 bucks from the Springfield Armory? Or order One from CMP for around $500 bucks? I am aware of the condition in which I would get the rifle from either company. I just want one that will function well. I don't mind spending $1000 bucks since it's probably going to be my only rifle nor do I mind getting one that shows much wear. I just want it to work properly. Any comments?

I consider this a question a personal choice. You are the one that has to use it.
My opinion would be that if you consider the $1000.00 a worthy investment in a lifetime rifle, then you should purchase the Springfield. This opinion is based upon the fact that the rifle is new and is gauranteed to function. There is also the warranty which gaurantees parts for a limited time as well, plus the company who does want dissatisfied customers.
I think the old CMP rifles are amalgums of parts that have various degrees of wear but are still within spec, however, it is not new and when it breaks or malfuntions there is no warranty, just a trip to the gunsmith.
I would also add, I don't think there is anything wrong with a CMP rifle, they are good shooters, they are just not new and do have some degree of wear.

In all honesty, there are many routes to be considered. The internet is certainly one if you have a FFL dealer close at hand who will handle your purchase.
Additionally, there are the gunstore and shops and gunshows.
My personal taste requires that I don't buy any weapon sight unseen.
Caveat emptor.

If the price of the SA Inc didn't scare you, then consider buying a Collector Grade HRA or SA from CMP @ $1,400. These have been near mint, & have tremendous potential for increasing in value, even if you shoot them. Or, you may find one of these on the used market in the same price range.

Not even close...go with the CMP rifle. The new Springfield is an acceptable reproduction not made to government standards. When you consider that the military rifles were fine tuned over thirty years of production you understand that most of the production flaws were eliminated....the same cannot be said for the new Springfield M1.
A CMP Service Grade rifle($500) will give you somewhere between 8000 and 12000 rounds of enjoyment at maximum accuracy before you need to consider barrel replacement. The commercial non-gov spec barrels on the new "wantabe M1's" will probably give between 3500 and 6000 rounds at the max. Finally you have to realize that many of the CMP rifles were armoury rebuilt to near original condition and not used after that rebuild. I routinely see service grade rifles on the rack at CMP North with MW's of 1 or 1.5 and TE's of 2. You probably won't get that out of a NIB Springfield Armoury reproduction. Oh yeah did I mention that I mentioned the barrels on the repros are commercial not military. I have a Navy match M1 that at last careful count has over 13,000 rounds through it; it has an MW of 1.5 and a TE of 2.5.....try getting that out of a commercial barrel.
Finally with an original from CMP, even an "expensive" $500 service grade, you do have $500 left over to buy ammo and accessories. Now me, I look over the CMP rack grades looking for gems in the rough and thereby save an additional $100 per rifle. Geeze I even went for a Greek rack grade last week at $295 that had real potential. I spent $295 on a rifle that soon will be worth over $1000 with the specific idea that it will have cadets shooting the hell out of it for the next few years. I doubt that you'll be putting the same number of rounds through your rifle that five or six cadets are capable of expending in practice through mine. Beach
P.S. Mark...maybe you should send me what you want in a rifle and the money and I can select your next year's rifles!!!! I mean at least you wouldn't just be getting eight rifles picked at random by some guy in the back room. I've got 2 Garands, both bought from the CMP. I considered a 'new' one at first, and am now glad I went with the CMP Garands. For the price of ONE 'reproduction, a copy' I have TWO original, REAL Garands.
Does anyone know if you can walk in and buy a Garand at the Alabama location like you can at the Ohio one?
