Scope mounting
I mounted a new Burris 4.5-14x42 scope with medium Leupold rings on a Rem. 700 stainless 25-06. My question is there is only about 1mm of clearance between the barrel and scope, I can slide about 3 $1 bills between them. Will the barrel ever expand enough to make it touch the scope, should I get higher rings?

I'm replacing a scope on my Savage 110. The new scope is shorter that the other, so the rings don't line up with the mounts. But, I turned both mounts 180 degrees, to where they are fastened with 1 screw each and half of each mount hangs over the bolt. There is still enough clearance for the shells to be ejected properly. I think this will work, although I haven't shot it yet.(mounts & rings are Weaver)
Is this suitable? Should I use a 1 piece mount instead?

Should be alright. Have several scopes mounted the same way and haven't experienced any problems. If you go to higher rings, you will most probably screw up your cheek weld to the stock.

vegasblj, For best accuracy you want the scope as close to the boreline as possible, so dont change your mounts. As long as you have .020-.030" clearance you should be fine. Way to check up though, its always better to be safe than sorry. have fun shooting, LOVE THOSE 700's[:D]

I agree that your clearance should be fine. As for the ideal scope hight above bore, yes, lower is generally better but you might want to try this;
Close your eyes and bring the rifle to your shoulder, from bench, offhand, or whatever position you'll be shooting from. When you open your eyes if you're centered on the scope, or below center line, then stay with what you have. If you find that your natural position has your eye aligned above center of the scope, then you might want to consider a higher rings.
