Colt SAA pricing

Hi all, new to the board and am so glad I found it. Very informative. I would like to see if I can get a ballpark on a Colt SAA pistol. It is SN 3557XX in 38 Spl. I think year of production is 1940. It has been shot, no box or paperwork. I am going to get a letter on it from Colt later (thanks for the Colt link in other threads). Anyway it has a blued barrel with case colored frame. It is all original and looks new except for a small wear (2mm) on barrel and a mark around the cylinder. It has been in my family since the 50's so I'm pretty sure it hasn't been redone. Sorry no JPEG images. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello sounds like you have a very nice pistol. You are in the right serial range for it to be a factory 38 special .However I don't think you will be able to get factory info .COLT lost some records about this serial range. SAA are hard to put a price on because condition and org. of piece would have to be seen by pictures or in your hand.If yours is "ALL" org parts and as you describe. $3000 plus quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN"

    Your Colt SAA is what's known as a "1st Generation Commercial, Late Smokless Powder SAA" (serial# range 339,000-357,000), and, according to the serial #, was manufactured in 1937 (355400-356099).

    Blue Book Values:

    98% - $6,700
    95% - $5,500
    90% - $4,200

    Add 20% for checkered, oil finished grips with flush medallions.

    Thanks so much for the info. I guess I will still call Colt and ask them about the letter and just hope they can find info on it. I'm glad to see the values as well. The only hesitence I had about the gun was that it is a .38 spl. and could find no info on it. What years did they make it in this caliber? Also I will post some pictures in a bit. Thanks all.

    Hello great looking pistol Better than I expected If It Was shipped as a 38 special and not a restored gun it is one of a fairly small No. of 38 specials and worth about twice of what I gave as a low estimate by all means try to get factory letter if it is a rework with later barrel etc then my $3000 is about right

    Thanks perry shooter. I knew it was kind of odd having a 38 spl. because I couldn't find info on them anywhere. It was originally my Grandfather's and passed to me in his will, so he had it since the 50's. I have looked at it pretty good and it looks all original. The blue looks even and dark. And to think, I used to lug this gun with me when rabbit hunting. I just wipe it with oil every now and then and look at 'er.
