Ruger flat top 44
I picked up a Ruger flat top 44 with serial number in the 29000's. I was wondering if the grip frame is the same size as the 357 flat top so the grips are interchangeable and were the orignal grips wood with the black eagles or were the they black plastic grips

Should be the same frame size, in fact its the same grip as the Colt SAA. The original grips were black checkered plastic. They may have used wood on the very last flat tops. Another possibility is the grip frame was changed out as all of the various generations of Ruger grip frames are interchangeable. 0 -
Ruger changed gripframes in 1962, right at the tail end of the flat-top manufacture. Up until then, the gripframes were marked, under the grip panels, XR3. In 1962, the gripframes were REDesigned to allow for slightly more room between the gripframe and triggerguard and were then labeled XR3-RED.
Your flat-top is in the tail end of the manufacture and could have either or. Best thing to do is to pull the grip panels and see what is marked. That will tell you.
If it is XR3, then the grips will interchange with the black rubber grips from the early 357s. Almost all 44 flat-tops were shipped with walnut grips, except those very few shipped during the first month of production, Nov 1956, unless special ordered. With full house 44 mags, those checkered rubber grips hurt!
