Armed Guard firearm suggestions please?
I am about to enbark on a career as and armed guard and I was wondering What type of gun would be right for the job I was thinking of some type of glock as i have heard nothing but good things about them. I would appreciate any feedback anyone could give me thank you

You're going to get a bunch of replies on this I would think. I've never worked as an armed guard but I would think, since concealed carry is not an issue, a 1911 would be pretty high on the list.

I agree with Jeff, though not in his firearm selection (no surprises there) that what you need is a BIG handgun, something which states that "I am armed" to everyone who passes by you. A full sized .45 ACP should do the trick and you can't do better than a SIG/Sauer P220.

I won't even consider arguing with the previous choice of caliber! Never bring a gun to a gunfight whose caliber does not start with a "4"! Seriously, what you carry will depend on your experience with handguns, and what you practice with, or will practice with on a regular basis. Another consideration is weather or not the local municipality you will be working in has a legislative requirement for armed guards. I repair alarm systems for a living, and years ago while working for Honeywell in Cleveland Ohio, we carried on the night shift. We were licensed by the city as "armed guards" and had to follow thier regulations as to what we could carry. The only, and I mean ONLY thing armed guards in the city of Cleveland could carry at the time were .38 specials. I carried my Smith model 19 but loaded it with Gold Dot .38 specials. Only drew down on someone twice, and never had to squeeze one off. Check with the licenseing authority to be sure.

I take it that you are going to be doing private security....most companies will issue you their own firearms and usually don't allow guards to carry their own firearms.

My personal choice would be .45 caliber, 1911.
My second would be a 4-inch barreled, Ruger GP100.

I worked many years on an armored truck, and the only gun I ever carried was a Colt 1911 45acp.

bobbo180, I suggest you select a caliber that you can hit with. I personally was never able to hit as well with a 1911 type .45 as with less powerful calibers. I think a Glock would be a good choice as would a double action Ruger, S & W, Walther, Sauer or other high quality pistol in 9mm parabellum or larger cal. In my 30 years as a full time law enforcement officer I carried .38 Spec., .357 Magnum and 9mm at various times. I gave up carrying a revolver after learning the details of the shootout between FBI agents and a couple of bank robbers who were well armed and committed. This occured in the 1980's in FL. 0 -
My choice would be a Smith and Wesson 5904, 9mm. It won't pull your pants down all the time, since it has an alloy frame. Very reliable, and hicap mags are easily available. 0 -
I'd go for a Glock 20 (10mm). The 10mm is more powerful than the .45 acp (in fact it's more powerful than the .357 mag), plus in the Glock 20 the normal capacity is 15 rounds and you can get +2 extensions for it. When using premium ammo, that'd mean that a Glock 20 in it's factory 15+1 capacity would have over 12,000 ft. lbs. of total energy. That's a LOT of whoop-@$$ for bad guys should they every want to pick a fight with you.
I like 1911's too, but with the added capacity of the Glock, the reduced weight, and the no-frills revolver-like action there's nothing to mess up in the heat of the moment. It's the prime cartridge AND gun for home defense or for armed guard/police.0 -

I'm not a huge fan of Glocks, but I'd be inclined to agree witht his assessment. 10mm has a lot going for it.
OTOH, the SIG SP2340 in .357Sig would be more controllable, at the expense of stopping power. Depends on the size and srength of your hands.
Ultimately, it comes down to the individual gunowner. You should carry whatever points naturally for you. Pointability dictates accuracy, accuracy trumps cartridge power. When the SHTF, you won't take the time to get into a good Weaver posture, sight in, and carefully pull. You will point and shoot. Choose to hit what you point at.

Speaking from experience, I would ask my employer what I could carry on the job first. Then come back and list the options that you have. It would narrow it down quite a bit. The question you asked today will get a thousand responses if not locked downed by the 10th. Good luck on the new job and come on back.
BTW, Illinois armored an armored car company just went to auto's a few years ago...Only allowed revolvers before that.
