I am trying to find out what the differences are between single and double action pistols and revolvers. Thanks ahead of time for any info.

  First let me say welcome to GB. A singel action means you must mannualy cock the hammer first to fire the hand gun. A double action means that a pull of the trigger will cock and fire the hand gun. [8D]

  Single action pistols and revolvers must have their hammer cocked before they can fire. On a single action revolver (Colt Peacmaker) the hammer must be cocked with your thumb. In a single action auto-pistol (Colt 1911 .45 etc.) the hammer is cocked when the slide is racked either by hand or by the action of the pistol. The advantage to single action is that all trigger pulls are the same length and weight. A double action has it's hammer cocked by squeazing the trigger. The action of pulling the trigger cocks the gun. Many times the first trigger pull is very heavy and long, but then the slide recocks the hammer for the second and consecutive shots, so the trigger pull is the same as if it were a single action.
