There are several types of firing mechanisms. It sounds like yours is on the side but some are located on the hammer.
These are nice little guns. I've got a hammer-selector version that's absolutely mint!
When you take it out the first time it'll take you just a few seconds and you'll be up and shooting. Sight in the rifle part with the sights but don't forget to pattern your shotgun to see how it relates to the sight alignment also. I've had one or two that didn't fire very close to the other barrel.

    Here's mine:

The button slides up and down, not in and out. Up is rifle, down for shotgun. These are great guns I have three. A .22 over .410 was my first gun ever. I started hunting squirrels with it in 1967. It's still hard to beat.

Nice little guns,I had one around 1948 or 49.It had a plastic stock called Tenite. That gun cost $26.95 at that time.Like TWalker says that button slides up and down.
