New Hunting Rifle
Looking at getting an additional hunting rifle, primarily for deer, but hopefully for other stuff too when I can. Current hunting rifle is a single shot .308 which is great, but want to add another choice. For the new one am considering the .243, .270, & .30-06. I'd like to get some opinions on which would be best. Also, I'll gladly take suggestions on any specefic models around the $400 range. Thanks.

I am looking at getting a new hunting rifle I was totaly sold on the thompson center pro hunter in 308. But a friend sugested I take a look at the Savage Model 10FP Tactical and the Remington 700 tactical. I have to admit now I do not know witch to get I like the idea of buying a barrel and I got another caliber rifle with the pro hunter, but I do not think the pro hunter is as accurate as the other 2. I have a long shot when hunting about 345yrds and would like to be able to confidently shot at least 300yrds.What are the differances between a rifle and a tactical rifle. ... more ? ? less 0 -
In that price range i would suggest a Rem. model 700.
The only problem i have with new rifles of today are the horrible triggers compared to the rifles i own that were built in the early 70's.
Thankfully model 700's triggers are very adjustable.
But...This weekend i checked out a CZ 550 in .308 and fell in love with it's set trigger.
It was absolutely marvelous!!

I would look at a Savage with the AccuTrigger they are a great gun for the money.
I don't approve of political jokes. I've seen too many of them get elected.0 -
SAVAGE by far! They are 2/3 (or less) the cost of the Remingtons and are very accurate and dependable. I have customers that sold their Remingtons and bought Savages and are VERY pleased with the change.

What about the caliber though? I really do appreciate the suggestions on brand/model, but need input on which would be the better choice -- .243, .270, or .30-06 (or others). Keep in mind I have a .308 now and hunt mostly deer and smaller critters in the East. Hope to go out West someday, but don't have any plans. Thanks. 0 -

Fwiw for years i was a die hard .270 fan but have now switched over to the .308 because i can find cheap surplus ammo to fire and in my nearly forty years of deer hunting i have never shot a deer past 250 years,not to mention the fairly mild recoil of the .308.
I also like the.243/6MM but i have also spent a lot of time looking for other peoples deer that have been shot with these calibers.

243 is a great all use round. Great deer/varmit round. I would stay away from 30 cal for varmit, and anything smaller than 243 wouldn't be too good for deer. There are better 6mm or evan 7mm rounds out there, but any store that sells ammo, will sell 243. So that's a plus if you don't reload. Rem., Ruger, Savage, are all good guns. I like the CZ. But my rifles I grab more often are a Rem 700 and a savage 340. 0 -
.243 is a good caliber for deer IF,and only IF,you do your part.I've hunted w/a .243 for years and to be honest,I have lost a few deer.I went to a .270 a few years ago and have had a lot better luck with dropping them in their tracks.As far as the rifle goes,I don't have a Savage(yet),but I've heard nothing but good things about them for the money.

.270 is a great round for whitetail deer. I've killed all of my deer with it. The only one that ran made it about 15 yards from where he was shot, and that was my fault. I dropped a 255lbs 11 point dead(as with all the rest, one upwards of 215lbs) in its tracks with it a while back easily. I'm sure it'd do the same for larger game animals. I'm a Browning fan, but I can tell you that the Rem 700 is a good gun. I dont know much about the savage but everyong here says its a good on also. You can't go wrong with either one. 0
