Black powder 870.

Hello, I have a fire damaged Remington 870 receiver and although I won't be using it for a shotgun because its strength is questionable, I was wanting to make it a black powder rifle. I have Hastings .50 cal. black powder barrel that uses 209 primers for ignition. I plan on blocking off the mag. tube at the receiver (so I can use the rest of it for storage and so it will never be able to be used as a repeating shotgun again) and refinishing the entire gun. I will also remove the shell carrier and make a plate for the opening. I have all the parts to replace the fire damaged ones (stock, forearm, trigger group [totally melted, really cool looking]). I was wondering if anyone has any opinions or thought on this. It will get very little use but I think it will be a very cool addition to my 870 collection.

    Hello SUPREME ONE I have an opinion but it aint what you want to hear so don't read any more. I think you have too much time on your hands . you couldn't possibly be married your wife would find something for you to do. You cant be retired because when you get old like me you can't get squat done and you have very little free time so you must be a GOV enployee that used to work for CLINTON.     If it's fire damaged, I wouldn't screw with it. Just leave it hanging on the wall and tell your buddies about it.

    Eastwood has a good point, and the strength of the bbl may be questionable. However, if I was motivated to do what you propose, I think I could 'proof' the barrel to be confident it will handle black powder.

    Man, you must have some time on your hands.

    I have a KRUPP 16 sxs bbl, receiver, sideplates w/hammer springs brought back from WWII, no trigger group or external hammers. You can spend a bunch of time on that after you are through with your 870 project.

    Hello, "the strength of the bbl may be questionable", why? It is new Hastings black powder barrel that has never been used. I have never worked for any government agent directly, nor am I retired (will be next year though), married, and I DO actually have too much time but only sometimes. There really isn't much to do around these parts and especially in the winter, so I need projects to keep my mind going.

    Hello I saw that you had new barrel and my comments were just in fun but I would just build a black powder gun there are many problems with an 870 conversion the hammer is so far back in the action I know you could cock it with the slide action bars but how are you going to get primer on the end of barrel? I know many straight line guns use shotgun primers but to turn barrel to match barrel extension and weld a block to match the part of barrel to go around mag tube whould be a big job. quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN"

    Hello, OK, the barrel fits right on the receiver with NO MODIFICATION. The primer is put in the breech through the ejection port where the shotgun shells usually leave the gun. You use the same trigger group and action bars. The forearm is still used to open the action and reset the firing mechanism. Same as before. The primer is still detonated by the firing pin, just as it would be with a shotgun barrel and shotgun shell.

    I think a lot of this is no one wants to say "go ahead" and then read about it 2 weeks from now that someone lost part of their face due to a soft reciever. That said, I have seen the kit for black powder and tho I think you could probably find an easier and better way to shoot black powder, I suppose this set up would be similiar to a carbon fiber AR in that the barrel is taking the punishment, the reciever is only the lock work and a means to aim and hold things together. It's still gonna be clumsy to prime and still a bugger to clean. I would definately mark the reciever and plug/deactivate the magazine. The biggest fear here is that someday, somehow someone will get the idea to put it back to use as a regular 870 with smokeless powder. Destroy the old shotgun barrel as it is now worthless. You still will be approaching the cost of a new Savage muzzle loader which can also use smokeless and I think can even be had with the accutrigger and excede the price of any number of other Traditions, and other budget priced muzzle loaders which will more than likely outshoot an 870 conversion.
