Class 3 Question

Wanting info before I possible call BATFE in the morning.

Seller sent me pics of the tax stamp on the gun. No ID number on the tax stamp as I have seen before BUT the SN of the gun wrote in ink across the area where the number goes.

Also on the paperwork there is an area for the Tax Stamp number to be hand written in. Their copy says " $200 ".

Anyone seen this before?

    I understand the process for getting a class 3 ffl. My question is what is this "law enforcement demo letter" that people auctioning weapons on gunbroker.com are asking for? If you are a class 3 dealer, do you need this "demo letter" to buy the class 3 weapons? What does this "demo letter" allow you to do?

    The Law enforcemnet demo letter is required for Post May 86 dealer sample automatic weapons. These are not transferable, except to another Class III dealer with a demo letter or a Police Agency with the approved paperwork. When the Class III dealer gives up his license the sample guns must be sold or demilled per BATFE regs.

    A demo letter refers to a group of firearms classified as post-samples. These firearms ARE NOT allowed to be owned by civilians. Class III dealers may own Post-Samples if they get a letter from a LE agency stating that they would like the weapon to be demonstrated. The dealer must demonstrate the weapon, but then can keep it as long as they keep their class III license. The weapons must be sold or destroyed[V] if the dealer gives up his class three license.

    Mark, I have a question for you. I'm a class III and as I understand it post samples are to be used for LE demos only. The thing that I question is the places around the country that rent G36's, 551's, and other post samples to the general public. Couldn't a dealer get in trouble for using these guns as rental units?
