AWB effect on shotguns and imports?

Well, after my last post I found a benelli M3 preban. Its supposed to be in unfired condition and has the mag extention. Only trouble is that it has rifle sights when I was hoping for ghost ring. Can the sights be changed? If so where do you get the ghost ring sights and how hard is it to install them?

Brownells www.brownells.com has "Ghost Ring" sights for Benelli Models M1, M3, Tactical M & Practical.
Have no idea if this will fit yours, and/or how difficult it would be to mount it on your shotgun. Best thing to do would be to contact a KNOWLEDGEABLE Gun Smith, prior to even buying the sight(s), to find out if it's even feasible?

Unless the gun is a factory folder there's really no reason to get a preban model since the extensions are still available and run about $60 for the 4 shot extension.
With the folding stock there is some legality issues and I know you can't add a folder to it, as well as you can't add the mag extension.
I don't remember on the sights either, I got rid of my M3 with ghost rings probably 5+ years ago. I was gonna replace it with a factory folder but never did.0 -
I appreciate all the help thus far. Bambihunter, I was under the impression that I cannot add a magazine extension to my M3 unless it is an H&K import (I guess this means pre 1994 ban). I was also told that even if the sun sets on the AWB, it would have no effect on imported firearms such as the benelli. The only H&K import that I have been able to find in unfired condition comes with rifle sights. I would prefer to have ghost rings and am wondering if they can be installed on a M3 that has previously had rifle sights. Basically I'm looking for a legal Benelli M3 w/ ghost ring sights, pistol griped stock, and the 2 shot magazine extension. 0 -
The pistol-grip stock MIGHT make the difference with the wording of the AWB (something about the grip protruding from the gun), but it is NOT affected by the same ban that affected the folder I do know that. I do also know that the mag extensions are still available off-the-shelf nearly 10 years after the ban started so I doubt they were affected but that might be the case if it's mixed with other "evil" features like in rifles.
Food for thought... If I were you, I'd consider waiting until Sept. because I'm pretty sure the setup you're after will be totally legal if the AWB sunsets and isn't replaced and would likely be cheaper than what you're expecting to pay for the preban. Not to mention that if it's truly preban it'll have the older safety style and other minor design feature changes that have been updated in the past 10 years.
As far as legalities, you might contact user Mark Christian here on GB. He's been very helpful in the past on info like this and can rattle off the exact wording as well as decipher it for us "common folk" who don't understand lawyer speak... [:I]
My Super Black Eagle is an H&K import, most people didn't know about them importing for Benelli for a while. You HAVE done your homework. [;)] I wouldn't trust the simple import label as a true indication of when it was made however for adding stuff that might otherwise make it an illegally modified firearm.
The M3's are great guns, they sure beat the Franchi SPAS for what they do!0 -

Is it possible that with the sunset on the ban, pistol griped stocks and magazine capacity would no longer be an issue? I keep hearing that this does not apply to imported firearms. Could we be confusing other "import" laws such as the ones that prohibit the folding stock on my benelli? I guess the question is what affect, if any, does the AWB have on this shotgun?

I'm sorry I did not mean to tick you off Mark. I was getting mixed info as you can see by the rest of this topic. One thing I fail to understand is that if ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law, then why are the laws so hard to understand and why are there not more resources for those who wish to abide by the law. BambiHunter was correct when he stated that the Mag extension for the M1 and M3 are still available. So I can buy a mag extension, I just can't put it on??? Anyway, I'm sorry for opening any can of worms that I may have. 0 -
So what was the final answer to this question? can a benelli M1S90 have a larger than 5 rd mag? and can i have a PG and larger than 5rd mag after the AWB ends? 0
