y series sub 2000 serial # model 12

machined receiver, plate 5, skeet trap 2 bbl combo, serial 1966xxx. circle 12 proofs on bbl hangers. what year was it assembled and made? go to work... only winchesters!

    That SN sure is low for a Y model...Sounds more like one of the last [64-66 clean up] pre Y guns. Must be an early Y model made with some of the left over standard production parts....

    Bob: 1964 began with S/N 1964759 and ended with S/N 1999999. Ref. (Riffle) The fact that you have a "Y" on your gun, tells me, that the gun went back to Winchester, post 1972, and the receiver was replaced. Over the last 30 years I've seen several "Y" pre 64 guns. Hope this helps you. In 1964 the only Md 12s offered were, Pigeon, Trap and Skeet version, No field guns. Regards Dave

    did a little more digging and came up with this. oh btw...i forgot to mention it was a pigeon grade. when the series ran out in 64, winchester shelved the leftover receivers and used them only for special orders thru the custom houe. it appears my gun was made in 1980 as a comeback Y series high grade. since all the pre 64 receivers were in the custom house, all they did was whack em with a Y and used them up for high grade pigeon guns. sound right?

    Bob: Receivers were serialized right after machining. True Winchester in 1964 took the remaining receivers on hand to the Custom Shop. When the Md 12 was reintoduced in 1972, and production started, the were machining parts, making barrels and receivers and receivers. the big difference, Y receivers are investment castings. where the pre0-64 were machined out of a blockof steel. They all had the "Y" designator. Like I said in order to get the "Y" designator on a Md 12, the receiver was replaced post 72, somewhere between 1972-1980. the true "Y" serial numbers began with S/N 1970899 according to Maddis and his 2nd edition of the Md 12.     or...built from the ground up as a pigeon grade custom shop gun using an old receiver in stock. thats what i conclude. i believe ALL high grade guns got machined receivers post 64. i mean, this thing has 2 bbls matched numbers, grade 2 (ferde'lece)(SP) wood, plate 5, and all hand honed. why would someone want to replace a receiver on a high grade gun? thus, im lead to believe this gun is a post 64 'super pigeon.' any particular places i need to look to verify?[?]

    Bob: email Dave Riffle and ask him. Look for the engravers initials, and include that info too. I can tell you that that Nick Kusmit, didn't engrave it. Your S/N is not close to anything he did, based on his records. Again email Dave at:

    i got riffles book here. i dug it out of the closet. as predicted, the super pigeon was made from 65 to 72 using old receivers. the Y was added in 65 and onward. this would explain the light strike mark on the Y. since the serial number predates the pre 65 era, the actual date it was assembled remains a mystery. last Y was made in 80 but the last super pigeon was made in 72. so, its between 65 and 72. this turned out to be a tuff one. still is.
