    Paperwork for these guns would be expected to accompany the gun; if not, there is way to get duplicates or any other proof of issue.

    The Colt General Officers Pistols were predominately 1908's ( .380's )

    H. Greeley wrote a book on them, including serial numbers.

    Wow I'm pulling this from my lower colon, but when a colonel made general officer he was usually offered a choice of one of three pistols. And if I'm not mistaken they were supposed to be engraved with his name. If yours is an original General Officers pistol with the extra engraving it should have his name and you should be able to back track through Army/Air Force records to his name...a letter from the family would be provinance enough for such a weapon. I'm actally going back about 40 some plus years ago when my Dad's best friend made brigadier general and they were trying to decide on which pistol he wanted issued to him...so I may be just a little off in some of the specifics.     Thank you all for your responses. I do not believe that they were engraved with the names, but some of them may have been. Also I think they issued many more 1903s in .32 than they did 1908s in .380, I believe Greely's book confirms that. Thank you all again/ Someone e-mailed me and said that the letters couls be obtained from the ordnance office of the Army. Anyone heard of theis?
