Recoil~Win/Mod 94 Legacy 44mag
I'm looking into a Win/Mod 94 Legacy in a 44mag. Just love the Overall Length at 42 1/8" and especially the Weight at 6 lbs. 12 oz. Need kind of an "all purpose rifle" (for plinking & protection against cougar and black bear). What's the recoil like on this rifle in a 44mag? Looking for ample power @ close ranges yet Low Recoil. An m1 garand @ 9+lbs would be nice but way out of my price range. Any advice?

I have the .44 Large Loop Winchester 94 Trapper, and even with the stoutest commercial loads, and hot handloads, the recoil is by no means opprobrious. My wife and 14 year old daughters love to shoot it, and do any time I'll let them.0 -

I didn't grow up in a shooting family but did shoot a Remington 700 Model .308 back in the military. I remember the kick on that 1[B)]. But it's not designed for all day shooting either. I don't mind moderate recoil but I really want to go through alot of rounds when I use it. Remember, this is just for plinking and protection aginst black bear/cougar. I ran across another option. What do you think about this set-up below? Heard usa/cz rifles are the best bang for your buck these days.[?]0 -
You heard correct, I have been nothing short of delighted by what I see from CZ over the past few years. However, for your stated use, a bolt gun requires more training and practice to fire quickly, has a more limited magazine capacity, and is considerably heavier.
However, to further complicate this apples-n-oranges comparison, buddy I do love a .308.
P.S. Keep in mind, that I have my .44 at my house, mostly for things that shoot back. It is light,handy, and you can reload while keeping your sights on the enemy. The Trooper is short for GA State Trooper.0 -
In the longer barreled guns the recoil is considerably less,than in a 16 inch barrel..However if you want to feel no recoil whatsoever,
use the 44 special loads, It will kick like a .220 -

Can I use a 44 special in a winchester model 94 chambered for a 44mag? And I'd assume it's a smaller casing. Will this stop a black bear with good shot placement?0 -

Interesting, the M1 Garand is actually the rifle I really want. Just can't swing $1000 bucks right yet. Don't mind the weight @9lbs+ don't plan on humping it around anyway. Got to be careful on the loads though, as it was designed to shoot 150gr FMJ bullet (M2 ball ammo) launched at around 2700fps. I'll look into that... Thanks[^]0 -
I shoot a Ruger .44 mag carbine which is lighter than the Winchesters if I'm not mistaken and I have taken two deer with it from my weak side and one deer "free hand" (not against my shoulder at all, it was at an odd angle).
People often snub the little .44 in a carbine but as long as a person knows its effective limits they're a real pleasure to shoot and are deadly without the punishing recoil. Let me just say that I often purposely plan a hunt to take my .44 instead of my .300 mag (not for the recoil, just for the thrill of the closer-in hunt).
Well, that's not exactly exact numbers or anything, but it might give you an idea of the recoil. If you've ever shot a SKS or AK, I think they feel very similar to a .44 mag when fired from a carbine.0 -
I have the Marlin 94p, which is a 44mag carbine , 16-1/2" ported barrel , my 12year old son shoots it with no problems , its taken 1, 8 point buck so far , drop him in his tracks ,,
I know the marlins can use both the 44sp, and the 44mag not sure on the Win. .. use the 44 sp for fun and the 44mags for hunting , a new Marlin 94 should cost right arounf $400 . good used ones down in the lower $300/325 range0 -
Hi Max,
The 44 lever gun should be no problem as far as recoil is concerned. Did a lot of extended target shooting with one years ago. If you can handle the Garand, there should be no concern about the 44. The 44 has a good bunch with its effective range.
I don't know about the 44 for a bear gun though. You would probably be better off with something a little bigger for insurance in the woods.
