Federal primers 209 and 209A

Can anyone tell me why you cannot substitute 209A primers for 209 primers when reloading shotshells? What is the difference in the two primers?

  Don't quote me on this, it's been years since I loaded for shotgun.
  
  Believe the 209A's are newer hoter caps, most current loads are for these primers. If you use any loads from old data, cut your powder charge by 1/2 grain.
