m1 carbine serials

I am a M1 Carbine novice. Here is my question.

Does anyone know when a M1 Carbine mfd by Inland with serial number:

3,017,1xx

was made?

I thought they only went up to the 2M's in 1945, yet the barrel shows the date stameped under the Inland of 11-43.

Other than the barrel near the muzzle end and the serial number on top of the reciever, I am not seeing alot of markings, 428 is lettered in white on the stock underneath at the base of the pistol grip.

    All USGI M1 carbines were made in the 1941-1945 time period. We really don't have a lot of records indicating when specific serial numbers were manufactured. Inland made over 2.6 million carbines in assigned ranges from 1 to over 8,000,000. Yours was probably made during the early to mid-war years.

    Inland barrels were usually stamped with the month & year that they were made, not when the carbine was assembled. Your barrel could be original or a replacement.

    The number painted on the stock is a rack number; it is not significant.

    Many markings cannot be seen unless you completely take your carbine apart. Even then, some parts are distinguished by their shape, not by markings. I suggest that you buy "US M1 Carbines Wartime Production" by Craig Riesch; it's an inexpensive book that should answer most of your questions.
