Marlin Mod. 39

I have a Marlin Model 39 serial # S followed by a number in the 1400's. Behind the hammer it says Marlin Mod 39 and below that is what looks to be a star. I would like to know the date it was made and its worth. It is in very good condition and shoots well.

    My grandfather has a Model 39 rifle that he bough off of some guy back in the 70s. As far as he knows the guy never shot it, and he only took it to the range one or two times. Anyway, it looks to be in exellent condition, with blueing on the barrel and such looking perfect to me.

    I think it is early production but Im not sure.

    It has an octagonal barrel and its serial number is under tha leer and says "2572"

    So what would the value of this rifle be?

    There's SEVEN Models of the 39...Can you give us a Model Number....? If Not...How about a discription...Depending upon which Model you Pocess and the actual condition....You could have a Gun worth up to $350.00......

    The Model # is 39. Wood is very eye apealing with a few dings. Gun looks very good to me. Has octogon barrel.

    Kent; By discription I mean what do you see when you look at this Gun....? I/We can only See thru Your Eyes...If its a Plain Jane model 39..does it have a Round Barrel or an Octagon Barrel? Is it the Octagon Barreled Carbine? I'll give You the Model Types...You'll have to figure out just what you have in your Hands....

    Im sorry that i am not to good explaining what i have. I thougt that the serial # would help with the date. It is a Model 39, .22 Shoots shorts, Longs & Long Rifle, takedown, it has a push button tube feed you push a button slide the tube up untill the button pops back thru a hole that holds the tube open for loading. It has a 24 inch octagon barrel, withan overall length of 40 and 1/4 inchs. It has a pistol grip stock, and it has a hammer extension that has JM stamped on it. Any idea what year it was made, the closest i narrowed it to was between 1922-1938. Thanks

    Kent, according to the book, Marlin Firearms, by Lt. Col. William S. Brophy, who worked for Marlin for years and was considered their expert historian your gun is a Model 39 and you are pretty close as to the years it was manufactured. If the barrel is marked Marlin-Rockwell it will bring a premium, these are very rare. The front sights had an ivory bead from 1922 to 1934, after that it was silver colored. Production of the 39A started in 1939. If you could find a Blue Book or go to the Marlin web site mentioned and give an accurate condition of the condition of the gun they might give you a good indication of value.

    I have the same model 39 that you describe, with ser # S40xx.

    Before the old Marlin Firearms board collapsed they had a forum just for the 39's and had very knowledgeable people there to help. I was informed my rifle was made in 1937, the year of my birth. It is my prized possession.

    This gun belonged to my father and he was born in 32. I thought it would be nice to find out the year of manufacture. I was hoping it to might be 32. Thanks for all the help. I have some really good memories shooting it with him as I was growing up.
