Lyman 438 field scope
Looking at a rifle which includes a Lyman 438 Field scope. Can anyone give me any info--power, age, quality etc. Thanks.

Lyman bought out the Stevens Arms Co.'s scope business in 1929, and one of the original Stevens scopes became the Lyman 438. It was first offered in 3X, and in 1937 a 4X was offered. Both the 3X and 4X were made with Bausch & Lomb lenses. It was offered with various types of mounts. It was discontunued in 1947. Listed value is $150 - $250 with an additional premium for the Target Micrometer mount.

Sure, it was built between 1930 and 1947, in both 3x and 4x. Field of view is 23 feet at 100 yars, length 17", weight 14 oz., tube diameter .75". Value between $150 and $250 to collectors. Decent for it's day, it is vastly outperformed by todays mid-range or even low end optics. It will do the job, but that job can be done much better for the price today. 0 -
