Thompson VS Ruger

I thinking about buying a target rifle and Im looking at either Thompson center arms TC22 Benchmark or Ruger 10/22 target, the range will be 50 to 100 yds Wich one will be best out of the box?, I don't have a lot of money for expensive mods so probably a good scope and rings and that's as far Im going to go!

    I dont know anything about the benchmark. Put a good 4x or variable on the gun with one inch rings, and the ruger will knock em out every time. I shoot jack rabbits with mine at 150 to 200 yards, and it kills em every time..

    I handled the TC last week at a buddy's house. He had both and sold the Ruger because it was less accurate according to the testing he had completed on both. Due to rotten weather, I did not get to shoot it, but will within the next couple of weeks.......

    Thats impressive, if it's accuarate. Not saying it can't be done, but a lot of things need to go right and the moon needs to be full. Not to mention a man told me that someone some where has to be naked running around their car singing happy b-day to u while the police are at the doghnut shop to pull those shots off EVERY TIME.[8D]

    I have a remington 597 and it shots great. I had to polish the hammer to get a good trigger pull but it still has problems with the bolt locking to the rear. The key whole safety blows too. Not sure this is a good recommendation. Matter of fact the only good thing about it is that it shots great when it does which is most of the time.

    If I was going to buy a 22 caliber target rifle, I would have to seriously look at the offerings from CZ. Had a 10/22 a long time ago, kept it for about a year and sold it. Trigger was lousy, accuracy sucked, and the LOP was way to short. But that's just me.

    I would take the CZ 452 first. If you want a automatic, then go with the Thompson, it is by far a more accurate rifle. It also has a great fit and finish. If I were you I would take the Thompson Classic though. The benchmark is too heavy for me.

    my 10/22 makes quarter sized patterns when the scope is zeroed in, and ive heard cz good for target but the 10/22 has mod options later if you want

    The 10/22 is a great nimble, balanced rifle. If this is your first rifle it'd make a nice one. As mentioned already they can also be customized to your hearts desire. If your mostly after target shooting you might consider thier heavy barrel version.

    Marlin also makes a model 60 which is a tube-fed rifle which is a good shooter. They're just slightly more expensive than the 10/22 and in my experience they are less finicky on ammo and slightly more accurate out of the box but options are limited on them.

    The CZ's have been mentioned so I won't elaborate any more on them.

    The Thompson's I honestly haven't shot much so I can't say for sure.

    There is one .22 rifle that I'll NEVER own again... An AR-7, I have owned several from thier various manufactures and they all sucked big time! They're supposed to be a survival rifle but give me a decent pistol any day!

    My suggestion is to go to the local gun store and handle them and see what you think. Sometimes simple ergonomics will determine which one you'll probably like best.

    I have a TC Classic 22 rifle and with Federal target ammo or CCI standard velocity ammo it will shoot 1/2" 5 shot groups at 50 yds. It takes about 1000 rounds to break it in. I looked at the Ruger target before I bought the TC 2 years ago and decided that I would rather have a steel receiver for the same money.

    I'll try to keep it simple, since you already have alot of advise[:D]

    I can put 10 rnds in a 1/2" circle @ 50yds every time, straight out of the box with only a simmons on top of my 10/22.

    And as far as hitting rabbits at 150yds, it can be done w/ a rifle dialed for that range shooting PMC ZAPPER 40GR. GOOD STUFF!!!

    My 9yr old daughter is getting her groups down to 1" @ 50yds. You just have to get used to the trigger.

    I have the heavy barrel 1022. But even my stock carbine w/16 inch barrel shoots great. We all know the little 22 can go 2miles..But I am just talking a measly 150 yards. I am not talking about killing a hog, just jack rabbits. As long as you lean on something and squeeze the 1022 with the 22 inch barrel does it every time. I just know what works for me. You can spend more if you like..
