Is it legal to own a 10.5 barrel for ar15 if its not assembled on the gun? I have seen these uppers at local gun shows for sale without rest of gun.

Mark Christian could probably answer this better, but I believe that it is illegal to own IF you own an AR-15, unless you have your class III license.

Or, probably depending on local laws, if fully assembled and registered as a pistol. 0 -
It is legal to own a short barrel, regardless of whether or not you own a gun to which it might be attached. These have been advertised by distributors in national publications with the warning "All applicable NFA laws apply".
Why anyone would want to own a barrel that can't be legally attached to a gun baffles me, though.

I don't want to buy one but just curious if they were being legally sold at the shows I've seen them 0 -
It is if it has a 5.5" flashhider "permantly" affixed to the barrel(welded or silver soldered).

If you plan on using this barrel on a pistol, or a registered short barrel rifle or machine gun it is perfetly legal. Please know that short barreled AR's are VERY ammo sensitive. They won't use anything like their big brother; the AR. 0
