what model is my s&w
i have a s&w revolver #k 117767, 38 special, 6in. barrel, target hammer, adjustable sights, dimond chekered wood grips. the guys at s&w said that it was made in 1951 but could not tell me what model it was. the man i bought it from said it was a model 23 but the serial # dont jive with what is in the blue book? can anyone help me with this. thanks, redman.

If it's blue or nickel it could be a 14,15 .Stanless a 67 or a 68.

I just looked in The S&W Catalog of Firearms and they don't show any mod 23s starting with a K prefix.

Sounds like a K38 Masterpiece. They didn't use stainless in guns then. 0 -

That gun was made in 1951. It has to be a K-38, also known as the model 14 after 1957. Model 15's were not offered with 6" barrels until 1986. Its not a model 23 either if it has "K" in the ser number. Model 23's would start with "S".
That serial number is way too low to be a model 67 or 68.
The diamond pattern on the grips were discontinued in 1968. Everything you described indicates it is a pre model 14 K-38 Target Masterpiece. It should have a screw on the right side of the frame just ahead of the hammer, and another on the outside front of the trigger guard. These are called 5 screw guns.

left out one small, but big detail,man did tell me that the barrel was replaced,#k271455, does this change any thing? guess it's still a masterpiece? 14 or 15? it's in great shape, can anyone tell me what it is worth. might put it up for sale. 0 -
Lefty's advice is right on target.
You have a K-38 Target Masterpiece. Period. Based on the serial #, it was produced before S&W assigned model #s to their guns. It's not a Model 14, it's not a Model 15, it's a K-38. Now, if you want to cal it a "pre-Model 14", just so that those not familiar with the gun have something to relate to, that's fine; but, that's not it's real name either.
It's difficult to estimate the value of altered, abused, or refinished guns. If you do a "smart search" on completed Gunbroker auctions, you find what S&W's in similar condition have actually sold for. After a certain amount of wear, most guns become "shooters" & no one cares if the barrel has been replaced.
