Rust Removal

I just picked up a couple of older progressive reloaders. One is a Star in 44mag and the other is a Size O Matic 800B in 12ga. They both have some rust on them that I would like to remove. Is there anything better than steel wool and gun oil. How about the Rust/ Blue remover I have seen in the gun cleaning products. Any help would be great.

    Is there a way to remove rust from a blued gun without doing more damage?

    "...anything better than steel wool and gun oil..." Doesn't have to be gun oil, but 0000 steel wool and oil works well, IF, and only if, it's just surface rust. No pitting. If there's any pitting, dies are paper weights. The machines are just machines. If the rust is on parts like rods and any place that flat machined surfaces are not required then it doesn't matter. Buzz off the rust with a fine wire wheel.

    I wouldn't use anything that will remove metal. Instead try Happich SIMICHROME POLISH or Iosso Products GUNBRITE POLISH. Either will remove rust when applied with a cotton cloth and some gentle rubbing. The GunBrite Polish will work on blued surfaces also if you don't get too carried away. Be sure to use a good grade of gun oil on the surfaces after using the above as they will completely clean the metal and leave no protection from further rusting. I use both all the time.

    I would try something like ZEP 45 and allow it to 'soak' for a couple of hours, then use some 0000 steel wool with additional liberal soakings of same while I "scrubbed" the rust off.

    Blue Wonder and 0000 steel wool, maybe a little heat as well[8D]

    Just coat 'em with Naval Jelly; gets all the rusty bits off, and there shouldn't be any bluing on a reloading press, so you're in the clear there. If the Jelly reveals pitting or long scars inside the dies; you now have some new stuff to throw at the cats!

    I would advise against chemical rust removal on the Star as I would with a $500.00 gun. The light alloy elements of the press would be harmed. I have used rather deeply pitted antique dies with surprisingly good results. A gentle cleaning with the 0000 should suffice and protect the rather valuable Star.
