Lefever DBL info and value
i have a double barrel shotgun, it says lefever arms co on left side of receiver. It has double triggers, checkering on the stock, a black cap, and on the forearm is a dog head in the black plastic. There is lots of case color on both sides of receiver, under the trigger guard it says patent 1872, then the numbers 73.80.85.86.87. Its a five digit serial number, 25XXX, on the bottom of tang, on the forearm, on the receiver and on the bottom of barrel. There is a red rubber butt pad on the bottom of the stock, even i can tell its not original. the receiver serial number ends in G. there is no rust, but how do i tell if i can shoot regular loads with it, as i don't know how to tell the old barrels, or damascus, from new. The barrels are kind of "scrolled" looking, and its in very nice condition. I was wondering about shooting it, and if anyone can estimate what kind of value would go with it. thanks for the help. dave

Hello if the barrels have "SCROLLED" look more that likely they are damascus and not for modern loads.Do you have a GUNSMITH you can take it to ? Closeup digital pictures might let us tell you but best way is hands on. 0 -
Dave, there are sites dedicated to the various flavors of early high quality shotguns, and a Lefever "G" grade is not entry level (not high grade, either). These sites will give you an idea of value. As to the type of barrel, if you cannot determine this yourself, have a competent gunsmith give it an eyeball. It sounds, however, as though you have what was called "twist steel" barrels which are a form of Damascus and should not be used with modern loads.
