10-22 ruger

my son just bought a 10-.22 [wally world] that is giveing him trouble ejecting the spent brass. two or three out of every load will remain in the action. the brass that is ejected are thrown all over the place. foreward almost even with the barrel to slightly to the rear. the bolt is traveling to the rear to pick up and trying to chamber a new round when it fails to eject. this happens with all the ammo we have tried.[different brands and types. ???[?]

    What can I expect of theRuger 10-22 at 50 yd. with a quality 6x scope on bags ?

    Remove the bolt, clean really good, lube with sewing machine oil,
    check the extractor should move apx .015-.020 inch.
    Just might take 100rds to free everything up, being new.
    Also Ruger has a lifetime warranty, check their website for details

    Make sure the ammo you have is "high" velocity and not "standard" velocity. The 10-22 needs "high" vel ammo.

    After you clean it good, lightly lube the areas where rubbing between the bolt and reciever is going on. This will enable the bolt to travel more freely. In my experience any gun oil will do, including LSA military oil and "3 in 1" brand.

    For whatever reason, my current 10/22 will only cycle wax-coated lead bullets properly. Uncoated lead or copper bullets will have failures periodically. I shoot cheap Remington Thunderbolts and Cyclones for most plinking and close-in hunting needs and it works fine. If you haven't tried the wax coated these can be had very cheaply so give 'em a try.
    That said, you shouldn't have to be stuck to a particular type of ammo from a brand new gun. If it persists after a couple hundred rounds then I'd send it back. Oh, I'd try another mag too. If that turns out not to be the problem, then you'll still have it as a spare.

    ruger 10-22's are excellant guns and are not knowned to have feeding problems.and i dont know what metco has against stinger ammo because it it the best shooting and feeding ammo i have ever shot.and ive shot alot! let me know.

    Perhaps METCO's advice against the use of Stinger comes from page 15 of Ruger's own instruction manual for their 10/22 which flatly states "DO NOT USE STINGERS"! I tend to trust the weapons designers and engineers on matters like this...but of course METCO and I may be among the minortity of shooters who read the instructions and believe what is printed inside. Enjoy your Stingers redman, but I'll stick with what the factory boys have to say about ammo suggestions.

    well, you got me there! learn something new everyday, thats why i like forums. i must be lucky cause i use stingers in everything and they work great. but thanks for the info. redman

    10/22's are known to be reliable little devils so my best guess is you got your hands on the rare lemon...if you cant solve your problem with the cleaning advise, trade it off with a $20-$30 bill and start fresh...not worth the frustration !!

    My 10/22 is the heavy barrel factory job with a match chamber. I've shot only standard velocity ammo and usually the higher grade stuff. Still get the occassional failure to eject properly, no matter which brand of ammo is used. Annoying, but all I have to do is open the bolt slightly and tilt the action over to dump the empty case. My shooting is done off a bench and only slow fire so the pesky faulty ejection doesn't bother me like it would someone wanting to go fast semi-auto.

    I keep the action spotlessly clean between sessions. Just the nature of the beast for my rifle and possibly yours.

    You have gotten some great advise on the forum.

    The factory manual does say not to use Stingers in the 10/22 so following that advice is prudent.

    I had some trouble with one of my 10/22 a couple months back and the problem was related to faulty magazine. You might try to pick up a spare for ten bucks and try that. The magazines can be purchased at Walmart these days.

    If this doesn't work I would return the weapon to whom you bought it from.
