Modified barrell on 12 Guage Winchester model 12

Giving thought to buying a 12 Gauge Model 12 Winchester that has a modified barrell. The seller tells me it was made before 1964. It looks like it was well cared for.

Since I'm not a gun collector and simply wish to put it in a cabinet, figured others more wise than I would know more about if it is worth what the fellow wants to sell it for. Any thoughts for a newbie who is interested in starting a collection? Any help would be apprecated as I do not wish to get burned on my first transaction.

    The Model 12 You refer to and in the Condition Implied...$400.00 would be as Far as I would Go....And then only after Seeing this Gun Eyeball to Eyeball..

    lowderdog: Welcome to the forum. Here is what you don't say, Plain barrel, Solid rib barrel, Vent rib barrel. Barrel length is important to a quick and dirty way to measure, where the two halves meet, (receiver and receiver extention) add an 1 in., that should be pretty close to giving you , 26, 28 or 30 inches. Most modifieds are 28 inches in 12 ga. So if it's a 26 or a 30 in, that would be a little rarer. Also is the butt stock the original length with the black hard rubber butt plate? Or has a recoil pad been added, is there any checkering? Is it the original blue? Easiest way to tell, remove the barrel assy from the receiver, there is a chamber ring, right in front of the breech bolt, it should be in the "white" no blue color.
    If you could answer some of the questions, and give us the approximate serial number, (in this fashion 654xxx or 1234xxx) we can determine the age. This is important because pre WWII guns, will bring 10-20% more than a gun built in the 50s or early 60's. If the gun was built in 1953, you would have the cheap action slide, (s-bar) variant) those are hard to sell.

    get back with us, with the info. Generally speaking you could be looking at a gun that's only worth $300. or one that's worth $1200.
