Can anyone help with the value of this 410

Greetings: I purchased the following gun at a farm auction in Iowa. I'm sure I paid too much but what the hey, that's what auctions are all about, right? Anyway I wanted a 410 in case my granddaughter is interested in hunting/shooting someday. I started my son with a 410 that was a loaner so thought I should have one. Sorry, I get carried away. Anyway I bought this Montgomery Ward Hercules 410. It is quite old I believe, model 1929, Serial 27660. Its pretty rough. It looks like the Stevens my son used back in the 70's which was a 40's or 50's gun. Anyway, at least one won't have to worry about taking it into the field! I hadn't noticed it when looking at all the guns before the sale but two bidders were really after this one. I though maybe they knew something about it as it was going quite high. I jumped in towards the end and my bid of $140 took it. How bad did I get, you know, taken?

    If it's what you wanted then it's worth every penny to you and you didn't get taken at all. [:)]

    Been there, seen it. .410's can have a real emotional response, espec. auctions. I've seen guns that shouldn't bring more than $35 go for over twice that. If it was a family member or neighbor that had some memory or always admired it, then also, there sometimes happen to shills or even the auctioneer. I've seen an Oak tree bid a couple of times. Is this a single shot break open or a pump? Can't seem to locate anything by model. This would probably be sometime about when Savage bought out Stevens, so this would not be unusual.

    If a double (which I doubt), then worth about $200.00 in working order but rough appearance. Twice that if in VG condition even though a trade gun.

    If a single, then prices start at about $35.00 with no premium becuse of appearance. In better condition the gun might bring $100.00 because of the small gauge but the buyer will have to be VERY motivated.

    While Nord is about right on with book value, the real value is what someone will pay. You out bid someone that wanted it $130 presumably, so you established it's value at $140. As long as you are not trying to sell it for a profit, you did just fine. Have a ball!

    thanks for the comment gentlemen, it is a breakopen, for all of your information, at this same sale there was a side-by-side double break open 410 that went for $675! I agree there is a lot of emotion around certain guns and for me guns that I was familiar with when I was a kid. Happy gunning everyone, bignordic
