Rifled Shotgun or Slug Rifle

I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice and info. I'm thinking about hunting whitetale using a rifled shotgun with a slug this year. A friend of mine told me to buy a slug rifle instead. Does anybody know which of the two makes a better slug gun. I know there are different makes and models of each, but I am more concerned with overall accuracy and distance. Any info would be appreciated.

    Jeff, I own a mossberg 500 turkey gun that i also have a rifled slug barrel for that i use to hunt in pa on occasion and i have found that it is very competatively priced and personally i like the accuracy as i have the fiber optic sights on both my turkey barrel and my rifled slug barrel and i love them they give me alot of brightness and allow me to shoot in excess of 100 yards with excellent accuracy and that is with the open fiber optic sights and you will save some money on not having to buy a scope also my gun total with the rifled slug barrel and the turkey barrel came to brand new it was just a little under $500 to be exact it was around $475 hope this helps you can email me if i can help you out anymore and good luck hunting--John ps i also use the rifled sabot slugs in my barrel which i think gives better flight and much better accuracy

    As a resident of Illinois - a state where centerfire rifles aren't allowed for deer hunting - I've hunted deer with a shotgun for many years now.

    Most guys start out with a plain shotgun - smooth barrel and a bead front sight. These work, but it is hard to be consistent having no rear sight, and are basically the hardest way to do it. Misses are common.

    After a few years, lots of us realize that a rear sight would help a lot. So we graduate to a shotgun (or just add a barrel) with rifle sights. Accuracy improves big time. The barrel may or may not be rifled. With practice, the rifled barrel and a sabot slug, you can get pretty good out to 100 yards or so. A few guys can do this with a smooth barrel and the cheaper slugs (non-sabot)too, but I'm not real good with open sights and find it hard to be consistent - especially with that buck looking at you and you're excited.

    So, the next step was a rifled barrel and scope. Basically a 12 gauge rifle. I settled on a Remington 1187 with the cantilever scope mount. A very sweet setup. Way easier to use than anything else I've tried. While I don't shoot for group size much, I have managed a 1 5/8" group with Winchester platinum tipped 400 grain sabot slugs. I'd be confident out to 150 yards - although where I hunt that shot would be extremely rare - never had a shot beyond 100 yards yet.

    I bought the 1187 used with scope for about $550 - so they aren't cheap. Remington also makes an 1100 version of this deer gun. I recently found a like new one of these, with scope, for $400. The only real difference is the 1100 won't fire 3 " shells.

    With one of these 12 gauge rifles, you really don't give up much to the centerfire rifles - especially if your shots are 150 yards or less. All 12 gauge slugs really pack a wallop too. Haven't found one of the cheap full size (1 oz) slugs that is accurate beyond 80 yards, which is why I hunt with a sabot.

    I used to hate that Illinois didn't allow centerfire rifles for hunting deer. With my current setup, it doesn't matter to me a bit.

    With a rifled barrel you need to use the sabot slugs, they arent cheep!!! about $12.99 per 5 for the good ones, but you will only use 5 to 10 shots to sight it in and 1-4 shots in the field so its not to bad. You will get alot more distance & accuracy with the sabot also. If you are buying a new slug gun I wouldn't even think of getting a smooth-bore.

    I use a Remington 870 with Winchester Partition Gold slugs 385grain

    I use the Remington 870 with rifled barrrel. I shoot the Brenneke sabot slugs, they make expensive ones and cheap ones. The cheap ones work just as well in my experience. I have bought them off season at Wally world for 4 bucks a box. I did buy some of their top end slugs last year, they only diffrence I could see was in my shoulder, it really hurt. I use the 3" slugs. However the 2-3/4 work also and are easier on the shoulder.

    a winchester 1300 black shadow in 12 or 20 gauge. walmart has them for $260. very light, very fast. i use remington copper solid sabot slugs, not cheap but not expensive either. i also have the 870 and mossberg 500 but the 1300 tops them both

    i have a new england firearms handi-rifle. when i bought it , came with a 223 bbl and 308 bull bbl. i then ordered a 20 guage fully rifled bull bbl for it for about $70. they come with the mount already atachted to the bbl. you can have a firearm ready for any occasion, just swap bbls. almost all calibers youll ever need are available. and very accurate. you might want to look into it?

    I started out 20+ years ago with an Ithaca 37 Deerslayer. Smooth bore barrel and rifled slugs. 10 years ago I changed to a Remington
    870 with a rifled slug barrel and Sabot slugs.

    At 75 yards, I can put all shots somewhere on to a paper plate with the Ithaca, the 870 will clover leaf a pattern dead center. I have taken several whitetail with each gun. I prefer the 870 due to the better accuracy.

    Guns only have two enemies: Rust and Liberals....

    Thanks guys- you've just confirmed that my newbie gun purchase of a Winchester 1300XTR 12 ga with the 28" barrel was a good buy at the price, just need to find that rifled slug barrel. Needed a shotgun and a deer gun, now just need to find that other barrel but they aren't cheap new. :)
