Hi,

I need help getting started to identify and assesss the value of the 1911 and holster shown in the pictures. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  I'm looking for a reliable 1911, open to cal.and make .But I won't be shooting in compition and don't want to tie up alot of dough. any suggestions? thanks Bob

  I have owned dozens (quite literally) of .45 autos over the years. I currently have a Colt Officers stainless, a 1942 Ithaca USN issue, and two S&W's. I have not fired a Rock Island as yet, but I can darn sure tell you that the Smith will do it's job. It really shoots every bit as well as I can hold it.In the hands of better marksmen than I, it shoots even better.

  It would be kind of difficult to respond to your question accurately, as the (2) pistols you're inquiring about are in different price and quality ranges. It would be like comparing apples and oranges.
  
  The Rock Island is made in the Philippines by AMSCOR. Most of their models sold here in the US are meant for first time buyers in the economy section of marketplace.
  
  To the best of my knowledge the S & W is manufactured and fitted here in the US, to a higher quality standard . And is priced accordingly.

  I dont have any experience with the S&W as of yet but i do the rock island. As stated above these are at different ends of the scale from each other and if i had to make a choice i would take the smith, the rock island i got had nothing but problems and i let a gunsmith get most of them worked out, put in new springs, polished the ramp and it still took some time to find a ammo that would feed without a problem so save your money and get either the S&W or a series 70 colt.

  I have just purchased a Rock Island 1911. It will only feed ball ammo. The magazine had to be tuned for it to do that well. I am not impressed with the Rock Island as an out of the box gun. If however you are an inspiring gunsmith and want a base gun to learn on you cannot go wrong at the price. If you want something good out of the box try the Smith, Kimber, Colt Gold Cup, Les Baer, etc... Any of these can be had in the $800.00 - $1500.00 range. A very good basic 1911 in the $500.00 and under class is the Springfield Govt. Model. I owned one in the 10mm version and was very pleased.

  Might you be thinking of Rock River? They make some very $nice$ 1911's.
