removing leading

What is the best solvent to help in removing leading from barrel?? I have used hoppes #9 for general cleaning but it doesn't seem to be working on removing leading.

    Hello you did not state what gun you were useing or type of bullet and lube. leading comes in 2 forms if you dont have proper lube or barrel is rough then the lead will be scraped off as it goes down the barrel hard bullets with TIN & ANTIMONIE will help as well as good lube 50/50 alox and beeswax. Trying to push a bullet too fast will cause so much heat that it melts the base of bullet and coats the barrel only cure is "GAS CHECKS" or slower lighter loads. now to remove lead in a hand gun try LEWIS LEAD REMOVER in rifle Hoppie's No. 9 works about as good as any . If barrel is rough try JB bore cleaner. quote:"PRAISE THE HARD BALL GUN "

    Shooters choice lead remover works pretty darn good. Got mine at Cabela's but I think Brownells has it also.

    A 50 50 mix of white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide will get the lead out, but don't leave it more than 10 minutes. I forgot it once and it caused a helluva lot of rust.

    just fire sebveral jacketed bullets, most lead will be gone the rest will clean up with a brass brush and solvent.

    I am sorry I must disagree with Mike on last post. I would never try to get lead out buy fireing a jacketed bullet. I can't speak for heavy rifle barrels or "HEAVY" pistol barrels But if you "AIR GUAGE" a 1911 barrel then shoot unlubed or improperly lubed lead bullets to build up leading and then shoot hot jacketed bullets when you do get barrel clean and check with air guage there is a "CHANGE" and it "AINT" a good change. I have seen barrels "RINGED" by shooting with heavy coat of RIG on the inside.Why take a chance? Why not spend time fixing the cause of leading as my first post suggested.I have seen BALL guns ruined in what MIKE suggested. quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN"

    I have been using Sweets 7.62 for some time now and am quite satisfied that it is one of the better fouling removers out there. Just cleaned my 1895 Guide Gun last night after having shot 40 rounds of 455 gr. gas checked lead in front of 39 grains of 4198 (yeah, it moves along quite nicely, and leaves a goodly amount of leading!) and after 2 brushing cycles it came out looking beautiful. I think this is a pretty good testament!

    Hi Ker2222,

    A simple "no fail" method is to buy some wire mesh cleaning patches from a place like Midway. Midway sells the patches in a kit with the jag. I believe Outers is the manufacturer.

    Lead can be very difficult to remove a gun barrel especially if it is caked or smeared. Many solvent manufacturers claim effective lead removal with a solvent, but few really work because lead cannot readily be removed with chemicals unlike copper solvents.

    The above patches are made from brass and won't hurt the barrel of your gun. It will cut the lead out of the barrel far more effectively and faster than any solvent.

    This is my opinion to add to the list of other good advice.

    Another good lead remover product out there is "RB-17". It's a litlle hard to find, but it works great.

    PERRY SHOOTER, THIS IS FROM AN OLDER NRA PUBLICATION. IF HE WAS AN EXPERIENCED MATCH SHOOTER HE WOULDN'T HAVE THE PROBLEM IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS WILL REMOVE MOST MODERATE LEADING FROM ALMOST ANYTHING. HEAVEY LEADING REQIRES OTHER METHODS (I'VE SEEN .357'S SO LEADED YOU COULDN'T TELL IF THEY EVER HAD RIFLING).

    Hello Mike my coment was not ment to be a slam on you BUT JUST to make him aware of chance of damage if heavy leading and tring to shoot it out. I still think it is best to try to "fix" the cause rather then do the work to repaire the result. I shoot thousands of rounds per year with no leading "GOOD LUBE, GOOD BULLETS, GOOD BARRELS & SANE LOADS" quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN"
