Ruger auto 22 pistol models?
OK, I want to get a Ruger 22 pistol. I see Standard, Mark I, and Mark II models. I think I like the 6+ inch target model but I would like to find one made before they put the stupid warning on the gun. I see Mark Is and Mark IIs with adjustable sights and the 6+ inch barrel like I want. Is there a model like this made before the Mark I? When did the warning appear? Thanks.

The Mark I is the first model adjustable sight series, but there are variations. I don't know when the warnings started. They are not on my Mark I and I bought it in 1966. It has a 10-xxxxx serial no. I bought one of the last Standard models and it has the warnings and a 17-xxxxx serial no. If you want an early model, look for one that has a single number serial no. and I know that it won't have the warnings. 0 -
I don't think it's a good idea to buy a Mark I .The slide does not stay open on the last shot.But if you don't mind that, go ahead.I would buy the 5.5" bull barrel in either model for target shooting.

i just bought a mark II and i love it. it has a 6 7/8" bull barrel, adj. sights and is fairly accurate if you know how to aim it. dont know anythong about the mark I or any warnings, sorry. 0 -
So does MK I refer to the adjustable sights? Meaning the Standard and MK I were made concurrently? 0 -

What you say is correct, the original Mark 1 dates to the early 1950's. It had longer barrel ( 6 7/8" ) and adjustable sights. I also owned a Mark 1 in the early 60's that came from the factory with a 5 1/4", adjustable sight barrel.0 -
The Standard model came out in 1949.The MarkI came out in 1951.They both have the A54 grip frame with the magazine loading button on the right side of the magazine.In about 1972 the grip frame was changed so the magazine loading button could be put on the left side of the magazine.This is the A100 grip frame model.All Std.models have fixed sights.All MKI models have adjustable sights.In 1969 they started the famous barrel warning junk.In 1982 they came out with the MKII models.On this model the bolt stays open after the last shot. No more Std.model.MKIIs come with both fixed and adjustable sights.Then they came out with the 22/45 model.In one year Ruger had 18 models in their catalog.Barrels go from 4 inches to ten inches.Stainless and blued models. Now they are coming out with the MKIII models.This is just a brief history of Ruger's fine little auto.Also the MKIII is coming out in 17 cal.rimfire.I could sit all day typing and not give you the whole history.If I remember right,Jim Clark held one shooting record for over 30 years with a MKI model.

Thanks for the help. I don't think 1969 is right for the warning though as I had standard models made in 1975 and 1972 and neither had the warnings. Now all I need to do is find a decent older Mk I for sale. 0 -
Sorry, 1979 is for the barrel warning.

Where will your search begin for the Mark I? I have one with 4" bull barrel and the other has (appears) 5 1/4" tapered. Adjustable rear site. Magazine release on left. Wood grips and a "13" # on the latter. Bull has black grip and "17" series #. If I can be of any help, advise. GW. gwvr@bresnan.net 0 -

According to the serial numbers on Ruger's web-site, to get a Mark 1 with out that nonsense on the barrel, your going th have to find one with a #14 or lower prefix.

a mk 1 bolt not staying open after last shot is an annoying feature. it can lead to dry firing by accident on an empty chamber, which is always bad for a 22....if you dont count your shots. the mk2 with a 5 1/2" bull bbl is really the way to go if you must have a ruger. why so against the warning label? i think its cute and looks good on a ruger![:p] 0
