Colt info
Would anyone have an idea or 2 how I can trace a bit of history on a pair of Dragoons? Bilt in 1855, there are no records available from Colt due to the fire in 1864. Any help appreciated. By the way, this is a consectutive serial # pair also numbered 1 and 2. Has anyone seen or heard of any of these before and an educated guess how many might survive? Thanx---IB[8D]

14,000 Third Model Dragoons were made in 1855...As far as having a set of consecutive Serial Numbered Colt Third Models...in pocession?....Starting with Number's 01 and 02....Very Doubtful..as Colt always had the First Guns made and Engraved and Presented to Potentates...and Honored Friends and Associates...and all are Known...! If You really Think You have in Pocession a Set of Dragoons...then by all means contact one of the Big Auction Houses...and if You've already Contacted Colt and They thought You had the First 2 outta the frying Pan...They'ed be on You like a Duck on a June Bug!..Stranger Things have happened I suppose....But the Forums have some pretty knoweledgable Collectors and Authoritys as its members...and No One has bothered to answer Your posting after 3 days...I urge You to take your 'BRACE' of Pistols to a Reputable Dealer for His Evaluation...if for nothing but Insurance Purposes....

Trukr, I think that there's a lot more to this story than you have told us. But, you may have a good reason for not giving us the details.
The very least that you will need in order to get information about these guns is a bunch of high quality digital photos. If you want to post them for us, I think we may be able to tell you a lot more. Let me know if you need help posting photos.

Capt.....I don't think that he's saying that the Serial #s are 01 & 02. I think he's saying that these are consecutively serial numbered pistols within the 3rd Dragoon serial range and are also numbered 1 and 2.
I believe that cased pairs were often issued this way, but they were typically engraved "presentation type" guns.
'Ol Sam was known to give away a lot of "Cased Pair Presentation Guns" to persons who could influence Government purchase of his weapons (his mother didn't raise no dumbies).

Xracer got it rite, and they are plain janes. They are not martially marked, therefore the only way military use would B if someone "took them along" or bought them as a gift. (seems resonable) Being marked 1%2 above the 14000 series serial number would I think definitely mean they went as a pair to 1 buyer. There is also a beautiful case, whether colt or not quien sabe, but it appears to B from the period. I have had an opportunbity to look over "Wilson, Belden, and Severn" an while they give outstandinf descriptions, tracing the "history" is not there. Have talked to several in the know dudes and they suggest a "sit-doen" with Larry Wilson and if he verifies them as authentic anwould put it on paper, would enhance things overall.
Thats about all I can say at this time, they ARE NOT mine but they will B probably put up for sale at some time. Thats all I can offer at this time but I appreciate the input, and will continue to do so[8D]

Well, IB, since the factory fire precludes your getting any history there, I don't know of anyplace that can give you any history on any particular serial numbered guns. About all you can do is have a recognized Colt expert examine them and write you a letter verifying their authenticity.
Might cost you a few bucks, but I'm sure you'd get back on the increased value when they're up for sale.0 -
Thas rite X, a few or a few hundred, it wont matter. Last I herd Colt was gettin $300? for a letter, and keeping $100 even if they did not have info. The possible value on these FAR outweifghs what Wilson mite charge. Thanx agasinan wotchu doin "so far from hiome"?[8D]
