Savage 99C-Series A

Hi Folks

I'm new to these forums so please bear with me. I recently purchased a Savage 99C-Series A. The stock was scratched up but the barrel and action were in excellent shape. I tore down the gun and refinished the stock with Danish oil. Have to admit, it looks pretty good now. Anyway, I went to the savage99.com web site and punched in the serial #. The site said the rifle was produced in 1918-1919. I found this surprising since I thought the 99C version wasn't brought out until 1965.

I'd appreciate any comments on the date of manufacture or the reputation of the gun.

    What Cal? If it is in Savage .250-3000 it's a shooter and worth some $$$. Just my .2 cents.

    Forgot to add a model 99 in .250 Savage that is in good shape are getting hard to find.

    Bogdog again. Sorry, I forgot to mention that the Savage 99C-Series A that I bought was a 308. Please, no one tell me that it was worth a fortune until I refinished the stock.

    Yes the value from a pure collectors standpoint has just been killed. Has it been drilled full of holes would also be a major factor in its value .I dont have my reference books here so I cant help with the DOM.

    God gave us all a gift. Have you found yours yet ?

    If it's chambered in .308 WIN. the manufacture date you gave is way off, that cartridge was not introduced until the mid 50's. (unless it was re-barreled)

    There were several Savage 1899's/99's designated "C" the history of the guns production. Is this the later clip fed model?

    My Savage book says that the 99-c was introduced in 1965 and the "A" series are later (1980's). In 1965 serial # started with 1080000. If you miss a digit you are back in the World War One era. Those would be 1899's. And the .308 throws that out.

    I guess the date of manufacture of the gun'll have to remain a mystery. I rechecked the serial number and it only has six digits so I'm not sure what's happened. The action is crisp and the groups are tight. I guess that's all I can ask. As far as the collectors value is concerned, I'm not realy too worried. I bought it for my son, so the value of the gun will increase in my life with every trail we follow together.

    Welcome. You say the rifle is in 308 Win. caliber. I must assume that it is also detachable magazine fed (most people would say it has a clip), is factory drilled and tapped for a scope. If so it was introduced in 1965.

    There have been many changes is this model over the years. The serial number might be numbers only or begin with the letter "A". To give you a better idea of when it was manufactured the serial number would be needed and a complete description of the firearm or perhaps some very good photos.

    These rifles are sought after by many hunters (assuming it is magazine fed) and the demand is good. Their reputation is fine, both as reliability and accuracy. These last two paragraphs appliy to the 99 in general.

    Thanks again guys. Yes, the gun has a clip and it has been drilled for a scope. The serial number is C203201. Like I said, looking at the stock when I first bought it, it looked like it had seen some pretty hard times, but the bore was clear and the action was tight. It had some other letters stamped on the bottom of the barrel, but I'm not realy keen on taking it down again unless I absolutely have too. Main thing is, from anything I've heard, the gun has a good rep' and, well, I just like it.
