What does it stand for

In Horace Greely's book on the Colt General Officers Pistol, does any one know what he means when he says "cert issue" it is in some of the tables in the book. Thanks

  My guess is Certified Issue and the pistol is probably the Colt 1903 in 32ACP.

  [?], Why is it the 1903 .32acp. The only reason I ask is I own and shoot one all the time.

  I don't know why but thats what was issued to General officers in WW2 and Korea - maybe also earlier and later.

  colt 32acp was considered part of the full dress uniform for high ranking officers. they wore them with their uniform for protection. (before bodyguards)

  additionally, it means 'certificate of issue' is on record. and why was the 32acp was issued? because, it was in the military supply system, it was reliable, simple, and slim in design.

  BTW, If I were to send to colt for a letter would they have a listing of who the firearm went to or would that be a military record[?]
