m-1 garand, unusual ?

I mantain several m-1's for the local VFW firing squad, all fitted with blank firing devises. one is driving me nuts (nutser?), it will fail to feed the third round (usualy, but sometimes 4th 0r 5th or 6th round). this is not due to short cycling, I've replaced the main spring, follower, follower rod and follower arm with no change. the blanks are all fresh issue (dated 00 and later)and the other m-1's work fine with them.

    Clean the gas port in the barrel, clean & measure the inside of the gas cylinder, check the op rod piston to be sure it is not binding, undersized or out of round, make sure the op rod is not bent, replace gas cylinder lock screw, check for bolt binding.

    thanks Neal but I've done all that. oprod was replaced about a year ago and all function smoothly with no main spring in place. the action fully cycles when fired (doesn't short stroke), these are only fired with blanks and I thought that may have added a new set of problems. I've been working with m-1's & m-14's since the mid '60s so I'm not exactly new to the game (mos 45b20 small arms repairman). It's just that I've never worked on blanks only rifles before.

    I don't understand Mike You state fail to feed but then state does not "SHORT CYCLE". If you get full stroke from gas system than problem should show up on hand cycleing. I feel that the Cartridge follower does not have time to rise to be picked up by bolt face. this is only caused by short cycle or bind in cartridge feed mech. I know for M14 we had a unit that slid into end of barrel to restrict gas escape but was also MAG. feed so was easy to trouble shoot.Karl quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN"

    thats what has me stumped. the action cycles fully to the rear when fired, but about once per clip of 8 rounds it will fail to pick up the next cartridge. I've replaced every part remotly connected to the feeding end of the rifle and the follower and arm work smoothly as well as the oprod and bolt, I even replaced the follower arm pin thinking it may be bent.???

    Im pulling this out of my lower colon, but reaming the gas port in the barrel to a slightly oversized diameter would ensure that more than sufficient gases were getting in to cycle the action. I know that Don McCoy, one of the foremost M1 match builders in the country, routinely oversizes that gas port hole to ensure reliable match functioning in the filthiest of conditions. You really don't have anything to lose if you try it. Beach

    my Obermeyer 10-1/5R Match M-1A flash port was reemed out to .078 with a #47 bit. cant say it will be the same on a garand, but opening it is a standard practice for high performance. but, it sounds like a feed problem to me. instead of pointed bullet tips hitting the chamber, those blunt tipped blanks are. they could be bending going in and not being noticed until it comes time to cycle out..causing a timing problem. check the blank bullet brass measurements. are they identical to the live ammo? if they are off, they wont stack the same in the clip, since they all are resting on each other. could the extractor be worn, as not to pick it up right? are bolt rails in the receiver worn making the bolt off tilt a little? gas leaking at the grenade screw? im firing them out there. run with it partner! i wish steve steven would give some input! he'd know!

    BOBINSKI; I'm using the newer style blanks, crimped almost pointy type end, nothing jambed. rifle fires, bolt and op-rod go back, empty ejects, hammer cocks, op-rod goes forward next shot goes 'click' no shell in chamber. not ever time, only once or twice per 8 shot clip (some times all 8 feed ok).

    sounds like something under the bolt is stripping the next round too soon causing it to be just waiting for the bolt to clear and away it goes. or the ejecting brass is pinging the one ready for battery. too bad you couldnt hook up a video machine, aim it at the chamber, fire until it jams up and play it back in slow motion??? i'll bet youll see it![?]
