What's the best factory class 1000 yd. bench rifle/caliber. Sorry I wasn't more specific. Some hosts to such events label them as hunting class. Syntax,syntax....

OK... now that you are a bit clearer, my vote is for the 30-06/.308. I personally prefer the 30-06 because it can push the heavier bullets required for maximum long distance accuracy a bit faster than the .308, but many do not see that as much of an advantage.

308, 30-06 6.5/284 etc. There is a minimum case size, but no max size. If you can handle the recoil, the Mega-mags in 30 and 338 would help, but with a 10lb weight limit the pounding will be brutal.

O. OFFICIAL RULES FOR HUNTER RIFLE COMPETITION. As adopted and approved by the National Bench Rest Shooters Association, Inc., Directors at their 1980 annual meeting.
1. PURPOSE.
(a) To attract shooters not previously engaged in Competitive Target Shooting;
(b) To improve hunter rifle accuracy and effects of components used therein; and
(c) To better acquaint the rifleman with his/her rifle and competitive sportsmanship.
2. RIFLES.
(a) Stocks must not be over 2 1/4 inches wide and convex on all bottom surfaces of the stock.
(b) Re-barreling, restocking and special triggers permitted.
(c) Bolt action receivers must be no wider than 1.400 inches and no longer than 10.25 inches. Projection on diameter not included such as recoil lug, sight bases, safety and similar items.
(d) The rifle barrel and action cannot be constructed in 1 piece.
(e) Method of connecting Hunter Rifle barrel to receiver shall not be greater in length than 1.50 inches. This shall include recoil lug barrel ring, barrel bracket or combination thereof.
(f) A Hunter Rifle barrel must not be less than 18 inches long. The barrel shall have a diameter at and not more than 4 inches ahead of the bolt face, of not more than 1.250 inches and a diameter at any point 4 inches ahead of the bolt face not greater than would be defined by a straight 0 between such point 4 inches in front of the bolt face at 1.250 inches and the muzzle at .750 inch diameter at 26 inches from the bolt face. Original factory issue barrels need not meet these specifications. However, any rechambering rebarreling with new or original barrel would then require that the factory issue barrel meet the above taper specifications.
(g) No blocking or sleeving of action or barrel will be allowed. Glue-ins are not allowed and barrel and action must be removable from the stock without destruction of stock. Nothing may be fastened to the barrel except sights, sight bases, muzzle brakes, mirage shields, and original manufacturer's attachments.
(h) Bore diameter must be .236 inch (6mm) or more. Case capacity of not less than 45.5 grains of water (.30-.30 capacity) is required.
(i) Magazines shall not be required, but actions must be cut out for a magazine. Such cutout must be large enough to pass the cartridge for which the rifle is chambered. "Cartridge" for this purpose shall mean the cartridge as ordinarily configured, including a seated bullet, when held parallel to the bore. A cartridge follower or ramp may be installed, but must be attached to the stock and may not be attached to the action by any means.
(j) Any sights. Scopes must be 6X or less. Vari ables must be set and taped. Target mounts not allowed.
(k) Rifle and scope not to exceed 10 pounds in weight.
(l) Falling Block/Rolling Block single shot rifles will be allowed in Hunter Class competition.
3. CLASSIFICATIONS. There shall be but 1 class in Hunter Rifle competition. Member Clubs may award trophies for factory rifles or light hunting rifles. However, any attempt to limit participation of qualified rifles or to set up separate classes may result in suspension of the Member Club. The intent herein is to encourage the new shooter to participate in Registered Benchrest Competition within the rules set forth herein.
4. COURSE OF FIRE. (a) Targets (100, 200 & 300 yards) for Hunter Class to be NBRSA approved. (b) The course of fire shall be 5 record matches at each range aggregate of 100, 200, and 300 yards. The total of the 2 or 3 range aggregates will determine the Grand Aggregate winner.

Same here, .308 and 30-06. To be honest I'm surprised to see so many fans of these calibers with all of the new stuff thats out. I have shot many different rounds and these are still my favorites.
the 06 will have less drop at that range than the .308 but contrary to popular belief the 308 is still effective.
I have been in so many disputes about the effectivness of the .308 at long ranges. I have a rem 700 in .308 and some would be surprised to see what that rifle can do at long ranges. and believe it or not at 800yds a .308 still has more energy than a .45ACP at the muzzle.

Firstly, the question is about 1000 yards benchrest not point blank shooting at 100, 200 and 300. The rules are different for each of the two games.
Here are some rules from the VA 1000 Yard Benchrest Club (IBS RULES)

"Factory Class" Competition
The VA 1,000 YD Benchrest Club is opening a "Factory Class" for new shooters at all of our regularly scheduled matches. Our sister club in NC already holds factory class matches at each of their matches also and have been very successfull at it. If your interested in trying out one of your rifles to see what it will do then come on over for a match. You will fire against other factory rifles only. The matches will continue to be held throughout year. 5 shot groups will be recorded for your record target using standard benchrest scores and procedures.
Rules are:
? factory barrel
? factory chamber
? factory stock (without any attachements except a recoil pad)
? glass bedding and floating of the barrel channel
? trigger reworked or replacement trigger.
? after market muzzle brakes allowed
That's it. Other than that... let's line'um up and may the best shooter win!
Some prepartory work will be necessary to ensure success in hitting paper once your at the range. Tapered bases or the Burris Posi-Line rings using their offset ring inserts that give you 20+ MOA slope without binding the tube is highly recommended. Leupold also make a "long range" one piece base mount that has 15 or 20 MOA built into it if you already own the Leupold style rings. Many regular 1,000yd BR shooters use the Burris rings with much success.
Some guidelines for what rifles to use are: Anything that will keep a bullet supersonic at 1000yds. This can be anything from a 243 Win using the heavier 90-100gr weight match bullets all the way up to the 30 caliber magnums with 180gr+ weight bullets. If your going to use the heavy match bullets, be careful to match your bullet weigh to the twist in your rifles. Most bullet manufacturers print the minimum recommended twist to stabilize a particular bullet right on the box. If you can't find this information contact any of the club members below and they will help you determine what you can or can't use.
Scopes can be anything from 12X minimum up to what ever you have. Approx. 20X is a good recommended power to use. It would be preferable if the scope had target knobs on it for ease of adjustment, but you can get away with standard knobs with some special consideration and thought before hand.
The best rule of thumb for you to do at home before coming to a match would be to sight your rifle in at 100yds to impact 30" high and you should be in the ball park with a high BC bullet out of todays rifle calibers. If you can't get your rifle to adjust to 30" high at 100yds without runnig out of clicks, then your probably not going to have enough adjustment range to get on paper at 1000yds. If you run into this problem, contact one of the club members below and they wil help you.

FACTORY CLASS:
We will also have a factory class for basically stock factory built guns. The factory gun must weigh 15 pounds or less, must have factory action, barrel, stock and trigger. The caliber must be 40 cal or less. Basic accurizing is allowed (pillar bedding, re-crowning, lapping lugs, trigger jobs). No factory custom guns like Remington 40X, no tight necks, no wild cat or improved chambers, no flat bottom bench rest type stocks and no flat bottom stock attachments. Muzzle brakes are allowed.
The factory class competitor has 6 minutes unlimited shot sight in period followed by 10-minute period for 5 record shots.
That's just 2 of the individual clubs and there are probably a dozen or more 1000 yard clubs in the U.S. The rules are all basically the same with some detail exceptions. You have to read each of the club's rules and then refer back to either the IBS or NBRSA sanctioning rule books.
If it was me, I would call the club that you want to shoot with and see specifically what "factory custom rifles" don't qualify. Quite frankly, in the first club, I would show up with a Sako TRG-22/42 or a Steyr SSB or a SIG LTR 970 and get some shooting done. Note that muzzle brakes are approved in both of these clubs but check the others to be sure. My cartridge choice would be 300 Winchester Magnum.

this BBL`D action currently holds a whole mess of long distance bench class rifle records. even in its original, plain factory configuration its a tack driver. one of the strongest, accuratte guns ever made, and few folks know or care about it...

for those limited ranges,..I would use a rem700VS or VSSF or Sendero for the rifle. I would replace the trigger, true the action, install a Vais break, and go to the match. If you plan on the 1000yd stuff,..I say go to a good magnum (speed helps by allowing heavy bullets with high BC to be pushed at 3000+fps) All that translates into you not having to be as savy at reading mirage and wind flags. I started with a super magnum for 1000yd IBS competition. That allowed me some margin for error on the windy days when the "big dogs" are trying to read wind flags and mirage to place their shots,..I simply place the crosshairs on the x-ring and launch a 216gr pill at 3200fps[:0][:p][8D] If you can handle recoil,..go with a magnum and eventually work on learing to read mirage,..then step down to one of the more efficient cases such as a 6.5-284 or 6-284 or one of the ackley conversions (308AI comes to mind)
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
