Dotter aparatus?

I purchased a Dotter Device (I think) in a pawn shop in central california. The actual device is not in the box, but the box is full of what looks like small targets, wrapped in tissue paper. All the targets are stacked and fit perfectly in the box and I would assume that it left the factory this way. Does anyone know what this is. I can e-mail pictures. Thank you

    I don't know if this is the correct spelling? As it's been many years since I've seen the device. It was called the "Hollowfield Dotter"

    It was a mechanical dry fire training device. It consisted of a rod that went down the rifle barrel. It had a point on the end. when the trigger of the rifle was pulled the rod would mark the target. It was supposed to show that the recruit had the sights aligned correctly and wasn't flinching.

    Spelling is "Hollifield" Dotter . . . these kits were produced in several martial calibers, particularly .30 US & .30-06. The "cartridge" has a spring loaded piston which is driven forward when the firing pin falls, in turn pushing a rod down the bore of the firearm and making a mark on the target. Apparently it was somewhat useful, as the design was used for more than one caliber. I'm not sure that there were any produced for civilian sales?

    I never realized there was a commercial application of this device. While shooting competively in the Navy, I used to take a common wood pencil and place two bands of 1/2" masking tape around the pencil until the pencil and tape was a sliding fit in the bore of the pistol. Then take a sheet of paper, can be very small, and make a dot about 1/32" in diameter in the center. Tape the paper to the wall the same distance from the floor as the pistol muzzle in a natural stance you use. Move toward the target until the muzzle is about 1" from the target. Place the pencil in the bore and cock the hammer, in my case a 1911 A1 Navy 45. Tip the pistol muzzle up to seat the eraser end towards the firing pin. Now sight the target as you would at a standard NRA 50 yd bull. Dry fire the shot and call the shot. The pencil will be propelled down the bore by the firing pin strike. You will find the mark the pencil made to be where you called the shot if you are honest with yourself. This practice works wonders for your marksmanship. Sincerely, onepopper

    So there is no confusion the pencil will impact the target just below the black dot. Just about 3/4" below. The group will be just as you would have firing on the range using live ammo. I word to you married guys, make sure you put a piece of heavy card under the target as the pencil will eventually go through the target and mark the wall.
