338 win??? magnum is the standard belted magnum case derived from the 300 H&H along with the 300win mag, 7mm rem mag, 264win mag, etc. The 338RUM is a 404 jeffries (non-belted) safari/dangerous game case,..necked down to 338cal. The shoulder is also pushed back slightly compared to the other RUM's,.due to the ogive shape on the 338cal bullets making feeding from the magazine difficult unless the shoulder and neck were moved back.

run balistics on both,....the 338RUM is one badazz performer. I have one at the gunsmith being put together as a toy. The first few factory rounds fired were quite impressive.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
    Got Balistics?

338 RUM = 111.0 gr. of water capacity
338 Win Mag = 86.0 gr. of water capacity

Length is obvious in the picture as is the fact that the RUM is beltless while the Win Mag is has a belt.

You need to be aware that the RUM will not load and feed from a standard long action. It is longer and fatter than the standard magnum cartridges such as the Win Mags. Remington changes the feed rails and uses a specially designed box and follower to hold and feed the RUM cartridges. However, both cartridges (styles) have the same diameter of 0.532" at the rim.

    338 Win Mag = 3.340" OAL
    338 RUM = 3.600" OAL

    338 Win Mag = 0.532" belt diameter
    338 RUM = 0.546" at the head

    That's the basic stuff.

    Best.
