Rust protection during hunt
I am going on my first caribou hunt in late August. I plan on bringing a blued gun with a synthetic stock. I am concerned about rust during the hunt. I plan on taking supplies to swab the barrel, clean the gun nightly, and keep oil on the metal but what else can be done to reduce the risk of rust? The gun is a "classic" to me and I really do not want to teflon, etc.

Sorry about that I didn't know how they sell it. I buy it by the case $73 for twelve cans (5oz aerosol) includes shipping and handling, as I give it to my agents for their weapons. One can lasts about six months to a year depending how many time you clean and wipe down your weapons. Did you see the advertisement?

I use a heavy coat of Wax either BIRCHWOOD CASEY The BLACK CAR WAX you can get at advance etc it turns water and does not turn WHITE 0 -
If you want to you can tape a condom over the barrel for added bore protection. "Condoms, they aren't just for sailors anymore!"

Hey, Ben, go to the office supply store an get some latex finger protectors. They don't need tape and if the wife sees them, she will probably make a derogatory joke about you! They will pop right on the muzzle and are a cheap way to keep the bore dry. 0 -
Beachwood Casey makes a product called Sheath that can be had in little paper towels 1 to a pack. I always carry some on hunts to wipe the metal down. Has worked well during rainy and snowy mountain hunts. Good luck on your caribou hunt, I am jealous! 0 -

Simoniz Auto Paste Wax....the old stuff in the round yellow can. You can put it on the metal and the wood. 0 -
I would recommend something like Super Lube.
It is a Teflon grease but with no visible flakes/lumps of teflon, it can be wiped off - it will not turn white or turn hard and it's quite waterresistant.
It's worked well on my guns, even when they get saltwaterspray from an hour long Zodiac-ride in bad waters.. =o)
Other than that, I would recommend that you use something that will leave behind a protective film - like BreakFree.
If you observe that you've rubbed off the film at a part of the gun, just remember to bring a small canister/can of BreakFree.
I trust a light grease more than oil of any kind.
The condom over the muzzle is also a good idea.
I used to use "Electricians tape".. that black elastic and isolating stuff, but it may leave some glue*/adhesive on your muzzle.
It CAN be wiped off, but it usually took a little bit of work once it got there.
Don't do anything that I've allready done - That'd be just plain STOOOOOOPID.0
