Reloading 8X57JR
I bought some 170 gr. bullets for reloading some 8X57JR brass for a drilling. The brass is Selier & Bellot, once fired, and re-sized to the same neck OD as new RWS brass. The first two rounds reloaded fine, but the third and fourth bullets were loose in the neck.
I measured some of the remaining bullets with a Starret digital micrometer, and weighed some in an electronic scale that is accurate to 0.1 gm. I found that the OD varied about 0.0015 in. within the 10 or so that I measured, and that the weight varied by as much as 0.2 gm.or about 3.1 grains.
Is this acceptable accuracy for a modern bullet? Should I make another re-sizing die to squeeze the necks to where I can get adequate grip to use these bullets or should I seek another supplier? The bullets are a nominal 0.318 dia and 170 grain, but most are about 0.3165 to 0.317 dia and they average around 168 grains.

.0015" variation in the bullet OD sure seems excessive to me. I can't imagine how you could get consistent results loading them, much less shooting them. Then, too, .001 to .0015" under bore doesn't help much in accuracy. In your shoes, I'd seek a different source. I wouldn't get a different die; that's treating the symptom, rather than the cause.
