What do you want to hunt with this? There is a major difference between taking a groundhog a 1000yds and an elk. For the first I'd want something like the 6.5-284 and the later one of the big Weatherby 338s or 375s and I'd probably say the later was a really bad idea. In any event figure on using heavy slugs for the caliber to keep the energy up so as to have anything left when the bullet got there. 0 -

There is very little justification for shooting at anything but a target at 1000 yards, but a few friends of mine went through the USMC sniper school nearly 40 years ago. They used .30-06s, but mostly were changing over to 308s. I've been working up loads for long range elk shooting, which I consider to max out at 450 yards, under ideal conditions and using a rangefinder. For this I use a 375 RUM, on a rebarrelled M70. It is a C.P.Donnelly barrel, with minimum interior dimensions and a 28" barrel. With pressures well within workable, it pushes a 250 grain Sierra at 3300 fps. 0 -
Honestly, I don't think it exists. You're looking at too much drop and wind drift at that range. However, an ex-marine back home shot a coyote at 1000 yards, but it's the only one I've ever heard of.

If you seriously want to hunt and cleanly kill something at 1000 yards, then buy one of the specialty rifles chambered for the .50 BMG cartridge. For what it is worth, the .50 BMG (in a custom built rifle) holds the world record for accuracy at all distances from 1000 yards up to a full mile (1760 yards). The 1000 yard record is right at or slightly less than a 3" group, and 8" groups have been attained at one-mile. If I were to hunt Polar bears, or any of the larger African big game, the .50 BMG would be my first choice. PMC factory loads this cartridge with a 660 gr SPBT @3080 fps, and 13,910 fpe... it will kill anything you can hit with it regardless of the range[}:)]

I'll second the .50 BMG, but I'd have to question most people who would even try to hunt at those ranges. Yes, I'm well aware that there are those very few people out there that can hold groups well enough to humanely take animals at those ranges, but even if you are one of those people - what's the point? "Hunting class" is a benchrest catagory. Rifle weight is the limiting factor, and most ranges don't allow the 50BMG.
The Rum's seem to be doing OK, bullet choices support either 308 or 338 bores, both using the highest BC bullets available (30cal 240gr SMK is a good bullet).
JustC would probably be the best person to contact, as he is into the 1K BR scene.
Why no cats? Your going to need to handload anyway, and the extra cost of the cat dies is chump change when your in this level of compation.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

"hunter class" benchrest has quite a few odd limits. One is a limit on powder capacity of chosen caliber. I beleive the 308 is about as large a case as is legal for hunter class competition. You'll see a lot of 30BR's, 30ardvark (30-30 improved). I may be wrong,..but I thing the bore size is also restricted between something like 6mm and 30cal (you would need to check that as I am more familiar with 1k rules) The rifle can have NO MORE than a 2" wide forend/bag surface which in 1k can be a full 3" surface. The rig also has to have a working magazine. Also,..the scope magnification is limited to 6x maximum. In 1k there is no restriction on magnification.
If you are asking for the strict interpretation,..then I would say a 308win unless the 300WSM is allowed in hunter class,..then that would be my first choice as a "hunter class" 1000yd hunting caliber.
If you want a non-wildcat hunting caliber for 1000yds,..with no provisions of being acceptable in the "hunter class",..then my first recommendation would be the 300RUM or 7mmRUM. These things really shine with heavy bullets and slow powders. As for hunting at 1000yds,..I have seen a doe taken cleanly at 1117yd with a tight necked 300wthby pushing the 210gr berger from a 30" kreiger tube. You have to first and foremost have a QUALITY range finder. Once you have an accurate range,..and you have PRACTICED out to 1000yds and have created a specific balistics table,..then shooting at game from a mechanical rest with an accurate dope log does not seem all that unethical to me. My first time on paper ever at 1k yds,..I shot a 10" group in the wind with a tactical (non-benchrest) stock and poor bench technique (IMO). That shows that a good load and a good rest can be used to take game at 1000yds with a high degree of certainty, even if you are not a competition shooter. The rifle, the range finder, and the load, as well as a good rest can make all the difference.[8]

This might be a good place to stop and ask that you explain better, what you are really asking about. I can think of 3 different explanations for what you might be asking. Would you clarify this for us so that we can give the best answer possible.
Are you asking about 'hunting', 'Hunter Class" or 'Factory Class' as in competition or 1000 yd. Benchrest classes or...
We could use a lot more information.
