Savage made ( 2 ) .22 caliber rifles, with a detachable box magazine during that era. The Models 4 & 19.

Give us the specific physical characteristics of your rifle and it's condition, we MIGHT be able to point you in the right direction.

    That's the model 23 or 23a, introduced in 1923.
It followed the 19 and was called the Savage Sporter.
The magazines are hard to find, cost from $50 to $65 usually. The same magazines are used in the 19 NRA.
Value?- - About $100 in fair shape up to about $175 in excellent.
No, I won't sell you any of my extra magazines.

Hi tcat, welcome to the zoo.

Your rifle is valued like the post above. That's pretty accurate because you could part it out, sell the bolt, magazine and stock for $125 to $150.
There's not really a lot of collector interest in them, compared to other Savages. They're nice shooters, but if you price one close to $200, you're approaching the price of other brand new nice shooters.
Replacing a lost magazine gets difficult and costly also.
I'd keep it, shoot and enjoy it.

    Notice I don't call a magazine a clip.
If my old Marine Corps drill instructor heard you call your rifle a gun or a magazine a clip he'd make you do a turn around the drill field with your M1 over your head,- in double time.

The real collectors of this series are generally looking for the other 3 calibers, the 23 B, C and D in 25-20, 32-20 and 22 hornet respectively. Magazines are a little expensive but can be had in the $30 dollar range if you look and take your time. Most of those that are priced in the $40 to $75 dollar range have been cycling through the auctions for many, MANY months now and I expect them to keep doing juast that! As mwntioned, the series 19 and 23 rifles magazines do interchange as do the 23 and 340/342 mags in 22 hornet. The prices mentioned for the rifle are likely pretty accurate as well with the occasional one being peddled for around $250 that seems to just sit there, again, for months at a time! the 19H (22 Hornet) is indeed a rarity though and that one will often fetch upwards of $500 if one is founf in good really shape. Please e-mail with any question you may have through my profile and I will do my best to answere your questions!

    Hi gang

Thanks for the info, How about a Hamilton and sons .22 cal single shot rifle pistol? Also have a Western Field 410 single shot snake charmer. And last a savage .22 cal pump gallery type rifle with hex barrel and tube fed.

Amazing the things that families collect and forget for 45 years.

Thanks to you all for the help!
