good 9mm
im looking for a 9mm pistol and dont want to spend more than $650. im not looking to do more than target shoot and would like a reliable gun that will be around a long time. also is there a difference between 9mm and 9mm luger? thanks.

9mm is generally used to describe the 9mm Luger, originally called 9mm Parabellum.
If you're just buying it for informal target shooting, there's no need to spend $650. A LOT of police departments traded in their 9mm's for .40 S&W pistols, so there a lot of them around. I think that the best bargains out there are Smith & Wesson 9mm's, which usually sell in the $200-300 range; check it out on the completed auctions on Gunbroker.

For that amount of money you can buy several very good hand guns. The Sig is very good then there is Colt. The Browning Hi Power is not to be sold short. Do your home work and you will not go wrong. The CZ/EAA line of target 9mm are also very good.

It depends on what "features" you want. Do you want a grip safety, a slide (thumb) safety, a trigger safety? Do you want a de-cocker, or to be able to fire a round, with NO mag in the pistol? How big is your hand? Can you handle a full size pistol, or are they a little "much" to hold onto? See what fits your hand, AND is a natural pointer for you. Do you want metal frame, or a plastic one? What kind of sights? Night sites, adjustable, fixed? The new Steyr pistol has a triangle sighing system that I would like to try. There is a bunch to choose from, it would depend on what you want. While Smith make a good revolver, I do not care for their pistols. Glocks do not point naturally for me, and I don't like the trigger safety. Personally for me, I would say to look at the SIG line (226 etc.) or H&K USP, you would not be sorry.

for $650.00 you could buy several new sidearms like beretta,sw,colt,glock all start around $550 depending on mod,finish etc just depends on what feels good when you hold weapon and fire it i personaly prefer .40s&w there is only a dollar or two difference in ammo price and no diffrence in weapon price

I'd go with a Glock or a SIG. Personally, I don't really care for the 9mm cartridge, the only 9mm handguns I own are a HiPower and a M-11. Look at the 40S&W

And don't forget about the Taurus! THEY make a great copy of the Baretta, and at about $200 less. I have a Taurus stainless AF99, and it shoots like a dream. And do not be fooled into thinking the 9mm is a wimpy caliber, most of the police forces out there, have gone to the 9, or are going to it in the near future. The 40 is also a great caliber, but for everyday shooting, the recoil gets to you, sooner than later. I live by the 9!

since a 9mm was designed for combat or defense, any 9mm will be a good one if youre not looking to put them thru the same hole. serious, any brand name, any age. there are plenty of used and new guns out here for under 650.00. enjoy the hunt! 0 -
SIG, Beretta, Glock and Browning HiPower are the main ones. Find one that fits your hands and whose sights you can see clearly. Clean used guns are in abundance--if the dealer backs up your purchase, you can save some dollars which will be used for extra magazines and ammo.

I'm with Big Barn. Although I am an Hk man, I have to agree that taurus makes an excellent copy of the beretta. In my opinion the taurus is better because of the erganomics of the de-cocker and safety. And they use better steel. From Brazil not Itali.
I have a PT99 and I have put over 5,000 rnds. through it +P+ Hydra-shok,cor-bon, you name it. And I have had no problems whatsoever.And they cost about $450 bn.

Everyone who I have ever know to buy a Ruger or Taurus auto has ended up selling them and buying the real thing. I've never owned either. 0 -
I have never owned a Ruger semi 9, but do have three Taurus. IMHO, great guns for the money. Probably like my SIGs better, but would be hard pressed to sell the Taurus line. 0 -
All these folks who want to pss on the 9mm 'cause it has be 'superceeded'..... tell them to get on the 25.. no 50 yard line, and give you two shots from the goal line with a $ 200 Norinco knockoff that you have practice with.
Ruger makes great wheel guns, but they take heat from some folks on autos.. the same for Taurus. Unless you want a target group pistol you could stick with used or good knockoff of mil surp guns. I have only 2 of 19 handguns that I paid $ 600+ for, and they perform wonderfully. However, I still enjoy having a couple of different older, useds models to change-up with occasionally.
Most folks are telling you the same thing. If you don't already have a stable of handguns, don't sink your bankroll in one gun.
