VZ 52 question

I went to the local pawn shop today and saw a vz 52. The only marks on it was 7.62x45 The gun was in nice shape. they wanted 350.00 for the gun. So here is the question. Will a 7.62x39 work in this weapon? What is the history on this gun? Is the 350 a good price or is it to much. Any info would be thankful.

    I replied to your post on the GD board as well, but I figured I'd add what I know about it. The VZ52 was a Czech designed autoloading carbine built to fill similar roles as the SKS would. In classic Czech fashion, they used their own round and their own design much to the chagrin of Moscow. Under pressure from Moscow, the Czechs made the later version in 7.62x39. The Czechs also made a VZ58 assault rifle that utilized the 7.62x39 cartridge but was later phased out in favor of the AK47 which was becoming the standard in Soviet Bloc countries. The Czechs are superb firearm designers and the VZ52 is no exception. The VZ52 when found here, however, usually has a pitted bore from years of corrosive ammo and the handguards are notorious for breaking. They often have a black spatter finish on them to mask the beat-up wood underneath as well. You can find plinkers in the $150-250 range, but a nice example with good wood and a good bore might be worth the $350 price tag. I've been shopping for a nice one for a couple years and haven't found one yet[;)]

    At one time there were conversion ring inserts to convert the 7.62X45 chambers to 7.62X39. They weren't too expensive last I saw them. The 7.62X45 ammo IS available. I have lots of it in stock. Then again I have some of the guns available for a lot less than $350 as well. You would be looking at around $250.

    What I have are the ones with the black finish. BTW, that finish was added at the importers in this country. The Czech's didn't do that, the importer did. Overall they are an interesting design. You can not fire 7.62X39 in the VZ52 rifle without changing the chambering first. Let me know if there are any other questions I can answer.
