Best All Around Auto??
Would like input on the best all around pistol.
Light weight, Small frame and reliable and not
to expensive. Basicly need something to carry
for self defense. Any input? Thanks.

with a question that vague, dont even go near brand names and calibers yet. just stick with this advice: get one thats dependable, one you can understand, one that fits your hand, one you can shoot w/o flinching, and one that is common in your area that shoots common inexpensive ammo. in other words...a double action revolver.

to fit what you have descrided I would to say a Kel-tec in either 32acp, 380 or 9mm,

My vote is for a Smith and Wesson J-frame Revolver with shrouded or concealed hammer like Model 49, 38, 40, 42, 649, 638, 640, 642, 940. my personal vote is for the 642 with Federal Hydra-Shok's. Or get a Smith and Wesson Model 6906 9mm from one of the places selling Police trade-ins for about $300. Both good choices in my humble opinion. 0 -
The new lone of polymer frame EAA Witness pistols made by Tanfoglio are really excellent guns for the money and I feel present one of the best dollar for dollar values on the market. As was said earlier though, how it fits, feels and shoots for YOU are the most important factors to consider!

Before you make up your mind about any pistol mentioned in this forum, please go to the Springfield Armory web sight, and take a look at the XD 9MM. I bought one of them as soon as they came available on the market, and as far as I am concerned, it is by far the best auto pistol that is made! It fits my hand perfectly, has less felt recoil than any of my other 9MM, and is absolutely 100% reliable! I have gone thru a couple of defensive pistol courses, and used the XD for all of them, and have never experienced any malfunctions at all.
At least look at it, before you make up your mind, and if at all possible, get one to shoot at the range. Makes all the difference in the world!

Hey the adivise is right on, what is the best to one isn't even close for another. There are places in the world that think the height of beauty is a veiled face that stinks of camel n worse.
My take is that you want a mid size frame in either a revolver or auto in a mid size caliber. When I was thinking these thoughts 10yrs ago I ended up buying a Astra A-60 12 shot 380 auto and have been totally satisfied with it ever since. I also own a Ruger security 6 in 357mag for much the same wants.
Still the best advice is for you to get your hands on, maybe even shoot, as many different pistols in the class you are interested in as you can. Everyones hands are different and it makes a big difference being able to get a real feel for the real thing, like a picture can never do.0 -

I own a baby eagle .40s&w semi compact (metal frame not the poly), it shoots great but weighs a metric butt ton. Not good for carry even in the pacific northwest. So I have to say I concur with BigBarn. I have researched the Springfield XD myself and that is the handgun I will try next.

Go to a good gun store and handle all their smaller autos. When you narrow the field down to what feels good and points well we can advise you better. There are plenty of large holster pistols for service and military use but when you get to small, light, non bulky, powerful autopistols the field narrows considerably.
Before you dismiss revolvers, check out the S&W lightweight J-Frame models. Their special advantage is in the ability to mount a laser sight in the grips. If you can get to a rental range you may be doing yourself a favor.
My favorite urban carry guns are Airweight Chief Special w/ Laser Grips, Keltec P3AT-.380 & Keltec P11-357SIG.0
