Keltec SU-16

Anyone have experience with this gun. It is a .223 rifle with polymer stock, folds up and uses AR mags.

A friend showed one to me at the range but I did not get to fire it.
Any thoughts on reliability, accuracy, any problems encountered.

    For the most part it seems to be a good rifle.

    Some claim its too flimsy and there have been a few reports of minor problems with flimsy components.

    Accuracy from the reports and info I've seen appears to be in the 2-3 MOA range.

    I'm considering buying one in the near future. But I live in California and you can't buy an AR here.

    The general concensous is that your better off with a AR as they are only a few hundred more.

    we have had exactly 2 here at the shop. the first one was SER#0062, and the one on the rack right know is SER#16XX. i think that the sights are barely adequate for shooting past 150 yds. it does come equiped with an integral scope rail, but its made of plastic (like the stock). i worry about how it will hold up long term...

    the high profile front sight is 100% plastic, and seems a bit exposed and fragile to me. the rear sight seems to be lacking in longterm durability, and is not adjustable. same thing with the trigger.

    i think its a light, short, easy to carry carbine that folds to store or transport. i think the fact that it will take AR mags, including the BETA drum is nice. i think a scope will extend its usable range, and tighten up groups...

    having said that, i think its a decent ranch rifle, or short range plinker. its not a durable front line combat arm, and i am concerned with what appear to be cost cutting measured use of plastic were metal should be placed.

    the price is fair, the WOW factor is high, and its great cabin / riot / survival / plinking piece.

    I have an SU-16 and am quite pleased with it. I have put about 500 rounds through it and the firing pin just broke. I emailed the company and they responded instantly at no cost. The factory mags jammed but the ar-15 mags work with no jams for 400 of the rounds. Accuracy varies according to ammo. PMC ball shoots one and a half inch at 100 yards with a 2 3/4 power scope from the bench. Other ammo shot as much as 5 inch groups. I fired 150 rounds through it at a sustained offhand, aimed rate. I used two 20 and one 30 round mag and had to reload them. The gun got quite hot but had no problems. The forearm got hot near the tip but not enough to burn the skin. (The firing pin broke on my next trip to the range). I have carried it in the field with a rigged combat style sling and it is so light you hardly notice its there.

    It has no set up for a sling. When I ordered a firing pin they told me to send in the mags and they would replace them. I got the mags but haven't tried them yet. In order to completely clean the rifle you need to take off the scope and when I put it back on it was off by several inches. This type of cleaning is recommend only after about 500 rounds. I can't comment on how good the plastic sights are as I don't see well enough to be competant in this evaluation. Currantly I have seen them at the gun show for $465. I paid more but I think they will be hard to beat for a ranch rifle. I was most impressed with the fact they did not jam with good magazines, not once.

    Thanks to all for the input, especially dannej for the hands-on evaluation. I went ahead and ordered the gun. The price was pretty good, $419 plus shipping and NIB. It will be a casual plinker, not for serious work. I already own a couple AR's for that purpose.

    Silverbox, you can buy these here in Calif as they are NOT Assault Weapons, so go for it. They are basically like the Mini-14 as far as the law is concerned.

    I know, when did I ever say you couldn't? I said you coulnd't buy AR's in CA, Not SU-16s..

    Last week I bought an SU -16, Saturday I put 100 rounds through it, shoots pretty nice, no trouble with the factory mags yet, but they only have 20 rounds a piece through them, I took two of my 30 rd AR mags with too. The "Bi-Pod" definitely is kinda cheesy etc, but everyone at the BUSY range stopped to ask me what I was shooting. I have a cheap simmons scope that once resided on my AR on top and it doesn't shoot bad, I didn't measure groups or anything, just going by eye and binocs. I am thinking about trying a holosight soon, should be interesting...
