92 Winchester

IRONSTICKS
Could someone date a 92 for me, It's to "new" for Cody records. ser # is 860492 any help would be appreciated.

    Numbers on this old piece are 30 30 98. Is this the cal. and year it was made?

    Ironsticks please give us more to go on and I'm sure someone with the answers will jump in. I don't believe the "92" was made in 30/30. please give the serial number ( found on the bottom of reciever of the rifle ) barrel length and description ( round or Octagon ) caliber should be on the barrel left hand side close to the reciever and anything else is very helpful.

    The number on the bottom of the receiver is 303098. It was manufactured in New Haven, Conn. U.S.A. Patented October 14, 1884.
    Barrel length is 24 in. if you measure into the receiver about 1/2 in. The barrel is octogon and I thank it says 32WCF on it.

    Winchester Model 1894...produced in 1904..Serial Numbers for that years production began at 291507 and ended at 311363...

    I agree that 1904 is the date of manufacture for your 1892 Win. 32-WCF is the same as 32-20 Win.

    Would it be safe to fire this Winchester. Everything looks and functions fine.

    Ironsticks....I have several Model 92's, both older and newer than yours and I fire all of them. The Model 92 is a very strong action, being a "baby" version of the Model 1886. Ammunition for the 32-20 (32 WCF) is still commercially available and will work just fine in your rifle. If you reload, it is a very easy cartridge to load. You can even find original Winchester loading tools and bullet molds quite easily. They are great reloading tools and very portable. As long as your rifle is in good shape, it definitely has a strong action.

    Hello Ironsticks...

    I disagree with the other fellows concerning the DOM... a Model 1892 with serial number 303098 was manufactured in 1905 (or later). You can determine the exact date by contacting the Cody Firearms Museum - http://www.bbhc.org/firearms/records.cfm Cody has the original Model 1892 factory ledger information for serials 1 - 379,999. As Max stated, the Model 1892 has a very strong action, and as long as your rifle is in sound mechanical condition, it is perfectly safe to use modern 32-20 ammo in it.
