REMINGTON MODEL 514 22 RIFLE HISTORY

Thought i would start a collection of inexpensive 22 rifles.Picked me up a Remington model 514 single shot 22 bolt action rifle.I have seen alot of them over the years.This one has no serial number,so i assume it's pre 1968.Anybody know the history of them?
It seems to be well made.Any bad things about them i need to know? Any extra parts i should be hoarding for it?

    I got one for Christmas, I believe around 1957. Nice rifle, accurate, used it a lot. The only problem I had was the extractor, had to use a pocket knife later on. I know I shot it a lot before I had problems.

    I have a 514. It had extractor problems. It was not the extractor.Look at the extractor notch at the back of the chamber. Mine had somehow gotten battered and would not let the extractor get a bite on the rim of the case. If this is the problem, gently peen it back in shape. (It's easier if you remove the barrel).Don't go too far or you will not be able to chamber a round. If you choose to file it, BE CAREFUL,if you take too much off the cases will bulge at that point and push the extractor off the rim. You will end up where you started.

    One type of smooth bore model 514 is marked "Routledge Bored". The one I had years ago, had a large number stamped into the lower side of the pistol grip, so it could be read while in a vertical position in a rack.

    Thank you for the replys.It does not seem to have any problems.I have fired it a few times with no problems.I think i am going to like my new toy.It does appear to be well built for an inexpensive rifle.
